Question Synthroid Dosage Question

I was on Synthroid .175 when I had my lapband put in. I have lost just over 20lbs and almost 3 pants sizes since then. So, I went to the Dr because I was feeling bad. We cut all of my meds in half except the Synthroid. We lowered the dose to .15, but I still think it's too high. I just had my levels checked on 06/24/09 and started the new dose on 06/25/09. How long do you normally have to wait to recheck thyroid levels if you are decreasing the dosage?? My Dr said 6 weeks, but that sorta seems crazy if the dose is/feels too high. Any advice, please!

I think 6 weeks sounds reasonable just for all the lowering of the meds to work itself out. What if it is not the synthroid that is making you feel bad? Lowering your weight won't always mean lowering Synthroid either. I have no thyroid so I am not sure if it is the same but I have been on .175 at low weights and .150 at higher weights. Depends on how bad your hypo is. I am 180 and on .175. I think that your thyroid is sensitive to other things going and he wants to make sure he waits long enough.

On that note, I think that lowering your Synthroid slowly is much better. I don't know how long you have been on it but, lowering it a little amount can have a huge change in your levels. It might be a concern of his to lower it to much. If your levels go crazy and you go back to being hypo it will not help on the weight loss track.

I would give it 2 to 3 weeks, and if you feel horrible still just call your doctor - it never hurts. They get paid to talk to us! I always get my blood check sooner if I don't feel ok!

I too would have guessed 6 weeks or longer to allow the former dose to clear from your system. Do you feel heart palpitations? Or any other "on edge" feelings? If you start feeling like you are unable to sit still, I'd suggest you contact your doc asap!
