Has anyone here noticed hair loss from taking Synthroid? I know that PCOS itself can cause hair loss, but I have never had that problem until recently, when I was put on Synthroid. I also know that hypothyroid can cause hair loss, so maybe I'm just still undermedicated -- but I'm concerned, because I have now read several people (on the About.com Thyroid forum) say their hair started falling out when they started taking Synthroid.
Anyone else here on Levoxyl or Armour? Did you take Synthroid before and notice any difference?
hi melinda,
I am 26 years old and i suffer from pcos and underactive thyroid, i dont really know what you mean by synthroid??
I am on 150mg dose of thyroxien, is that what you mean by synthroid??
coz my hair has been coming out for years, infact it started coming out when i was about 15, didnt know at the time i had underactive thyriod though, only just found out 2 years ago.
i did however have really bad sebborheac dermatitis at the time and i thought my hair must be coming out beacause of that.
My hair naturally used to be really really thick and bouncy, now i dont even have 1/4 of it left
But i havent really seen any difference since taking thyroxien.
I worry that i will end up bald in my old age!!!
but hey can you not buy natural thyroid hormone in america???
I am in the uk and cant buy natural one here, if i could i would definitely give it a try..
keep in touch

At the bottom of page 1, it mentions that levothyroxine can cause hair loss and that it's stated in the Synthroid patient literataure.
It's a wonder I'm not bald by now. I'm anemic and my hair was falling out a few years ago from it. Now with everything else I've been dx with since, and taking synthroid, let's just say I need to clean the drain a lot. My husband takes synthroid too. He already had a receding hairline, but the meds have really helped it along.
Hope this helps.

I wondered if I was the only one!
First I was on Cytomel and didn't notice a problem with hair loss. Then I was having hypo symptoms, so I went to an endo that took me off Cytomel and put me on Synthroid (my free T4 was low at 0.5). Then I started losing my hair bigtime! My internist put me back on Cytomel, and the hair loss lessened quite a bit. She didn't take me off the Synthroid though. I would worry I would have hypo symptoms again if I stopped the Synthroid. My doc said sometimes T3 supplementation can result in underproduction of T4. The combo of T3/T4 seems to be working okay for me.

Synthroid is a brand name of levothyroxine, which is the thyroid hormone known as T4. Cytomel is a brand name of triiodothyronine, which is T3, the more active thyroid hormone, but the one found in smaller amounts in the body. The body converts T4 to T3.
