i've been prescribed 0.05 of synthroid but i was told to start out taking half the pill every day, and if i don't get heart palpitations, i can go up to the normal dose. this scares the hell out of me! i'm afraid to start taking it, does anyone here get this side effect, or any kind of anxiety, or trouble sleeping at night?
You have only been started out on 0.05 which is not much, My 4 yr old dd who is Hypo takes 0.50mcg daily, I too am Hypo and I take 0.175 daily, the only time I have heart palps is when I am NOT taking enough meds, I do know it can go the other way too, but if you are getting too much at least for me it feels like My motor is running inside gotta go type mode, I have never had troubles with sleeping at all, I am so tired from being Hypo.
Were you DX as Hypothyroid? What exactly was Your TSH #'s??
Worse things can happen to you if you are Hypo and NOT taking your meds, You can develop heart problems, AF get very very heavy, you can get very very tired to the point of not being able to function, and in very rare instances you can go into a coma and die.

do you have a goiter? what kind of surgery are you having, total removal?
Really if you are concerned about taking the med why don't you call your dr and tell him/her your concerns. GL

Usually heart palpitations and headaches occur with the use of synthyroid when you are over medicated or do not need to take the med. I would suggest calling your doctor if the palpitations are accompanied by headaches.

When I started on Synthroid over 8 years ago, I got heart palps for about the first week, then they subsided. I am almost positve this is becaus it was a shock to my body to have thyroid hormone in it! I had a TSH of over 100 at the time. If you haven't had heart palps at a 1/2 dose, go up like your doc said. If you do get heart palps, go back down to the 1/2 and call your doctor.
