It says on my prescription not to take vitamins for at least 4 hours after taking the medication. It just occured to me that I'll often have vitamin water or a red bull first thing in the morning, which obviously has vitamins in it! Would having vitamins within those four hours have an effect on the synthroid? I don't think I've been taking it properly all this time.....

The important thing is to take it consistently. If you've always had it with vitamins, presumably your dose has been adjusted for that.
The problem is that certain minerals bind to thyroid hormone, making it unavailable to the body. Calcium, iron, etc. So what you should do, is take your thyroid pills first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, and then wait an hour before taking anything else. It should be in your blood stream by then.

No, don't take vitamins (especially IRON) within 4 hours of taking your thyroid meds. At medhelp.org a woman was taking 100mcg of Synthroid along with her multi-vitamin (because her dr failed to inform her not to) and when she had her TSH levels checked, they were consistenly high. She read on the internet that taking Synthroid with anything else is a bad idea so she stopped. She started taking the vitamin at night and Synthroid in the morning. She had her levels re-checked in 6 weeks and was actually able to reduce her Synthroid. It makes a big difference.

No, definately do not take your thyroid med with vitamins. I made that mistake and now I am so out of whack it's crazy!!! I had my TSH down from 150 to 29 (still too high, I know) but then I started taking prenatal vitamins and I took them about an hour after my thyroid....my thyroid levels went right back up!!! My endo wasn't happy with me!!! It's a good idea to take your thyroid in the morning and your vitamin either with lunch or at dinner, just depending on what time you eat lunch. Also make sure that you take your thyroid med with plenty of water, that helps! Good luck!!
