Default Synthroid vs. Levothyroxin? Brand name better?

I believe in the past my prior Dr. wanted me to take the brand name but my newest Dr. stated that the generic was fine. Wondered if anyone else had heard the same thing or cam across any research regarding this?

Either one are fine, but I've read that once you start on one you shouldn't switch.

hi, I have been on both meds and hormone wise they do about the same thing. this might sound funny but i am on synthroid becuase the lev. pills were getting stuck in my throut. the way they are shaped were hard to swallow even though they were small. I told my doctor and she said she was getting the same complaints from other patients. They could have changed it by now but thats how they were 3-4 years ago There is not a big difference in price between generic and name brand, so i just switched to synthroid and have been on it for about four years now.

My GP told me to never take the generic form of thyroid medicine... always make sure you get the name brand. Evidently there are not as strict controls placed on the generic levothyroxin; the synthroid is more consistent overall.

My endo has me on Synthroid. She tells me not to let them give me the generic because they switch things around way too often and you never have a consistent dosage. I dont know about all that but I do listen to her and just take the name brand!

My endo is very against the generic forms as well. I was given the generic at the pharmacy and it really screwed up my tests.

Default My PCPs Answer

I know a lot of your doctors have said the opposite, but I just wanted to post that I asked my PCP who is helping to regulate my thyroid. He said that it was ok to use generic (but he didn't recommend it a long time ago). However, he did say that he does NOT recomment the generic cholesterol lowering medications out there. Seems there are two sides to this coin, huh!?!

He is not endo or anything, just a PCP - but I think he is one of the most attentive drs I have ever met. He comes in and weighs me and takes my blood pressure and then talks to me about how everything is going with me. I can't remember the last DR that took my pressure. Probably my pediatrician 25 yrs ago!!! LOL

the problem with generic brands is sometimes the supplier is different. so even though it is 'generic', one month it might come from one pharmaceutical company, and the next month, it could be from a different company.

this is no good for thyroid meds, as the dosage needs to be consistent. my doc. said if we do generic, to make sure the drugstore knows that it needs to be a consistent brand ALL THE TIME. i opted to pay the extra cost and take the synthroid instead.
