Well, we've said that it was an option we were keeping in mind, but we've reached the point where it's not longer just an option.
We've started saving and we hope to be able to able to start the process in just a few months. Do you ladies mind if I join you for support, ideas and feedback? I want to learn all that I can about the process and what I need to do to help it go smoothly.
We'll be starting the process with our church's licensed adoption service when we have approximately $4K saved and will continue saving throughout the process. I know that the expenses vary depending on if you go domestic or international, so we want to save as much as we can (which we ough to do anyway, huh??).
Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and let you know I'll be lurking around your board.
Congrats on your decision its a wonderfully unique journey for each of us

Hi, Jenny! Welcome! My DH and I are also making adoption our family plan. I was wondering which church you belong to. We also are planning on going though our church once we have the funds and my DH graduates from grad school. We belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint or LDS chruch.
Again welcome to the board. Everyone here is so helpful and willing to share their experiences!

Wickiwicki - Looks like we have more in common than our taste in avatars then. I'm LDS as well. DH and will have been sealed (we've been married for 2 1/2 years, but had to wait for his 1 yr anniversary in the church before we could be eternal) for two years in just a few weeks, so we've got that part of the requirment down. We were really fortunate in being able to eliminate almost all of our debt recently, so we're going to save like mad and hopefully have enough to start the process in earnest by the end of the summer.
Good luck to you too! Hopefully we'll both have the families the Lord wants for us before too long.
My husband and I started the process as well, trying to gather information right now, but we're definitely overwhelmed. It looks like it's going to cost $25,000 and that is not in the cards right now. Both my sisters said they would be surrogates for us but it all makes my head spin. Any advice?
I look forward to reading your posts and helping out in any way I can.
Lisa

The money is definitely overwhelming, but don't let it stop you. There are grants available and also we have been amazed at how many people want to help financially. Also, have you considered a special needs child? Often special needs children have minor medical issues that can be quickly resolved, but most adoptive parents decide to adopt healthy babies and so these kids have to keep waiting. Usually the fees are cut drastically in order to encourage families to adopt these kids. See our website for pics of our beautiful special needs baby. He may need surgery, but then we expect that he will be right as rain!
If you want to know more about special needs adoption, please feel free to email me. My address is rachelwhitmire@yahoo.com

Wow Jenny! I've been hoping that another LDS person would grace soul cysters and think about the church adoption agency! I've been thinking about going to check it out. I've been to the website and we have the sealing part taken care of! =) It also is encouraging that the church is willing to help with the costs! =) I saw that you were interseted in international adoption. Does the agency handle international as well? I was under the impression of the church only doing domestic.
I'm so glad I asked what church you attend!! Maybe we can help each other out through this process! (((hugs)))
Feel free to PM me anytime!

I think they prefer to work with domestic adoptions, but the site says that international is an option too.
"LDS Family Services provides infant adoption services for couples residing in the United States, Canada, England, Australia, and New Zealand. The agency prepares couples for inter-country adoption by completing a home study which ensures that couples meet agency and government requirements."
It just doesn't say which countires. I can hardly wait to contact them, but I want to make sure that we're going to be able to save the money first. Also, we recently moved to this town and we have so much we need to move and unpack before we can even begin to think about setting up a baby's room for a homestudy.
