I know I have anxiety....2 doctors have told me. The first one gave me Ativan, it helped me sleep, which I wasn't (and now not) sleeping at all. He had me taking it twice a day though, before I went to work and before I went to bed. I was like a zombie at work and when I was home I was sleeping. I went to my gyno and she was worried about me taking it twice a day and put me on Lexapro. I took it for about 2 weeks and quit because of migraines. My mood swings are much better (not as often anyway), but I still don't sleep at night. Its like I can't shut my mind off. I think about everything and I worry about everything and I toss and turn. My gyno did tell me that if needed I could take Ativan at night to help me sleep. I haven't done so yet, cause of reading how addictive it can be. I guess I worry about getting addicted to it....Would it be ok?

I used to take Ativan to help me sleep (my mind also races like crazy, plus my limbs twitch when I finally do start to fall asleep). I didn't become addicted, but I have heard that it is addictive. I don't take it anymore because I'm TTC. Good luck - I hope it works for you.

If it's just sleeping issues maybe try Ambien...it worked for me to the point where I only need it a couple times a week if that. They say Ambien CAN be addicting, but I've read that it isn't as addicting as most of those meds are and I had no trouble after 3 months of taking it almost everyday and then I stopped for a month when i couldn't afford it didn't have any withdrawal symptoms, but that is just my experience I hope you find something!

I have anxiety issues and OCD and what my doc did was put me on long-term low-dose. I take a low dose of Klonopin (which is a benzodiazepine like Ativan, but longer-acting in the body) everyday, and have been for quite some time. Initially, I didn't feel that it was giving me relief, but then, I wasn't sleeping - I had a lot of problems with racing thoughts, so I couldn't fall asleep, and when I finally did fall asleep, I couldn't stay that way.... So I was put on Ambien as well. And getting good sleep and the low-dose of Klonopin works really well for me.
This might be a good cocktail for you. Are you not sleeping because of anxiety? In that case, it is good to take a benzo to help you relax enough to sleep. If you're not sleeping cause you're not sleeping, I'd definitely look into Ambien.
Now all benzos, and Ambien both can be addicting, which is why doctors typically do not prescribe either one for longer than two weeks. It has been my experience that I have not been able to discontinue either one of them without the aid of further medication, so I just remained on the cocktail. If I try to go to sleep without either, I can't do it. I lay awake all night, and get up and check the kids and the windows and doors - ugh.
I have been taking ativan regulary for 3 months. It helps me to calm my thoughts when I get overwhlemed...which is all the time. I also use Ambien at night.
My husband was prescribed Restoril (temazepam), 15 mg, for sleep and it has helped him immensely. It's in the same family of drugs as Ativan/Klonopin. I've taken all of those drugs at some point and I find that the temazepam worked awesome for sleep and didn't leave me groggy. Plus, it doesn't have some of the weird side effects of Ambien.
