Angry Taking MET and still no AF

Hi All

I am new to this board but have popped in a few times and it full of so much information it is great.

I have been taking Met for 3 months now. First two months at 500mg a day and last month at 1000mg a day. I have also low carbed for these three months.

I was only officially diagnosed with PCOS 3 months ago because all previous doctors/gyn said it was not PCOS.

I have only had two periods since November 2002. One in April 2003 that was natural and one in February 2003 which was brought on by provera.

Am I expecting too much to think I may have had a period by now. I am going back for my three month check up on Monday and wonder whether I should ask to increase my dose even more. My gyn who is lovely and very understanding didnt seem to keen on increasing it over 1000mg before.

I would also like to try for a baby - should I ask for clomid now or wait to see how I go with Met.

Questions! Questions!

Thanks xxxxxxxxxx

I am sorry you haven't experienced the results you desire yet.

I just saw my endo yesterday. He said that glucophage/met is a drug that is slow to work. I also have not had AF. He told me that I need to be at the maximum dosage and it may take a year to know whether or not it will or will not work.

Yeah, I don't like that answer either. Sorry.

I didn't like any of his answers.

Just an fyi, the lowest recomended dose for woman with PCOS is 1500mg. I started out on 1700mg met and got AF within two weeks. My little sister started out on 500mg for the first week, then went to 1000mg the second week and then 1500mg the third week. It took her two and a half months to get AF after starting the met. We all respond diffrently to the met, but you might want to talk to your Dr about increasing the dose.

I KNOW how hard it is to be patient when you're trying to have a baby (I've been there and it is a heartbreaking wait), but Met really does take some time...but it will hopefully be worth the wait. I started met and got my period 10-11 weeks later. I had a couple of 28-30 day cycles and then my periods got all irregular again...up to 60+ day cycles! When I finally figured out how to eat to control my insulin and got really serious about exercise...I never had an irregular period again and i started O'ing. So if you aren't already, moderating your insulin and exercising can REALLY help the meds work better.

My Dr told me it would be a MINIMUM of 3-6 months before I would see any significant changes on met, so it's just not a quick fix. Burb is also right, that while some ladies can do fine on smaller doses, the minimum effective dose for met is 1500 mg, so a dosage increase might be needed for you. Your Dr should try running your labwork again, and if it isn't improving, you would definetly be a candidate for the 1500.

Wishing you the best!

I'm new to the boards too, but not to PCOS. I've done a lot of research and everything I've read says it's about a 3-6 month average for most people. My doc told me it was 4-6 months at 1500 mg/day to get AF - and studies I've read say it can be much more. My doc said I had to give it a year before we'd add another drug. I've heard of lots of people that it happened sooner for, but I'm trying to be patient too (definitely not easy to do).

I'd suggest contacting your dr. and seeing if you can increase to the 1500 mg and see how you do on that for a few months.

Have you taken a HPT? I don't mean to get your hopes up, but I started Met on September 03, 2003, and got a + HPT on September 29, 2003. It worked that fast for me, and I know I'm not the only one around here that this happened to. This is after 5+ years of TTC with nothing but a chemical pg. I never did have AF on Met..I conceived before it was able to happen!

Good luck!

Thank you all for your replies.

I went back to my gyno on Monday and she is really pleased with my progress.

She did an ultrasound and I had an egg showing up so she thinks I will get my period in a couple of weeks. I was hoping DH and I might fertilise it before that happened - am I being ignorant or am I right in thinking that I was ovulating that day so it was possible?

She said to increase to 1500mg on my Met now and then another 500mg in a month.

She is also referring me to a dietician specialising in diets for women with hormonal problems so any tips I get I will be sure to pass it on. Since I have low carbed I have lost a stone (gone from 10st to under 9st and my bmi is at 20 so cant afford to lose anymore weight and have the opposite problem.
