Red face Talk to me about your natural successes with hormone balance!

Hi Ladies. I was diagnosed with PCOS in October and have seen four doctors since then, all of whom suggest birth control when I ask for Metformin. But, birth control makes me crazy, and no one will prescribe me Metformin since I am not IR. My hope is now diet, exercise, herbs, and luck. So, tell me -- what has worked for you?? I am looking to reap the benefits of reducing the physical symptoms, but most importantly, I want to lower my LH and get my hormones in order.

A little about my particular situation: medium-sized cyster (5'4, 135); acne; hirsutism; irregular periods; determined but losing steam.

Have any of you achieved hormonal balance without the aid of prescription meds? If so, please share your plan of attack with me!

I went off bcp last October and went to a naturopath to help me out. I had gone off bcp before and was very unsuccessful at having a period (only one in one year). Anyway, I have had a period every month since going off this time!!
I truly believe exercise and diet are key to this... with some "other" help too.
I take the following everyday:
saw palmetto
Symplex F (supports all hormone glands)
SLF (which supports the liver)
B-complex vitamin
Calcium supplement
I also have to take thyroid meds too since I'm slightly underactive.
My doctor also told me to get The Schwarzbein Principle book for diet suggestions. There are some good books out there and most are posted here!
I'm training for a triathlon, so that keeps me active.

Good luck with your journey! Everyone is different, you need to find out what works for you.

Thanks, mkaz! I have never seen that book mentioned, but the website looks promising. Congratulations on regulating your period -- that's hopeful news.

Hallo!
Last week I visited an endocrinologist specialised in PCOs and asked me to stop taking the BCPs since I take them for almost 13 years! THey asked me to have 2-6 months off so as to see which is my hormonal profile and then decide what to do. I am afraid of being off BCPs and without any help (herbal, etc.) for so long. Do you believe I can try Saw Palmetto too (what is the dose you are taking?) or this may effect the results of my exams?? I believe it is a natural treatment and I would like to avoid having all the terrible symptoms coming back (acne!). (*&^&%*$*#
Based on the fact that you also had a similar experience before I would appreciate your advice. (You r so lucky that you had your period back after getting off BCP!!!). :-)

Saw palmetto is supposed to reduce androgens. Therefore, I would think it would affect the hormone profile that your endocrinologist would like to do. If this is your first profile for PCOS I would just wait out the few months. I know it's bad, I was there once too! However, once you get that profile, you can decide what you want to do... either through drugs, natural remedies, etc. I just hope you won't discount more nautural ways to go. So many women do! If you do want to help yourself feel a bit better while you wait for your hormone profile to be taken, research some PCOS-friendly diets and exercise. I think those two things are the MOST important factors in controlling PCOS anyway. And those are things you will want to do for life.

Good luck!
