I used pads for about 5 minutes when I turned 12 and got my first period. I think by my second or third cycle we were driving by the drug store when I got the nerve up to ask my Mom to buy me some tampons. I just didn't like the feeling of pads, it was so messy, and I felt like I had to shower 6 times a day just to feel semi normal.

Life was REALLY good after I started using tampons. I was also pretty lucky that after day 1 or 2 of my cycle, when I laid down, my flow would totally stop. So I could go to sleep with no tampon, no pad, and just get up and go to the bathroom in the morning and my flow would return. A panty liner was all I needed when things were heavy.

I was always a little concerned about TSS but never knew anyone that ever had it, so I wasn't too scared. That amazes me that many of you have worse cramps while using a tampon. Seems like the pain of my cramps only ever correlated to whether or not I was ovulating, but since I never really used pads, I guess I wouldn't know. Will be interesting to find out in the future!

BTW - GREAT post Gumbie, many, many great and valid points!

I've had it. It's AWFUL. It's the sickest I've ever been in my life. Because the Emergency Room doctors failed to check me for it (both nights I went there with a 104 degree temperature, and barely able to walk), I fought the charges (which were about $15,000) and won.

I stand corrected! But I still refuse to wear pads

Did you ever mention that it could possibly be that?

I would think that because it's somewhat rare, it would be hard to diagnose and it seems it'd be commonly overlooked.

I came on SO quickly, that it was the first think I thought of.

One minute I'm sitting watching Oprah feeling perfectly fine. About 15 minutes into the show, i'm chilly so I grab a blanket...about 10 minutes later, I'm shivering and my temperature is about 100 (I'm typically at 97.something).

A few minutes later, I'm VIOLENTLY shivering, and my temp is 101...then 102...then 103...

At that point I called a friend and asked her to take me to emergency (Oprah was still on at that point...that's how quickly I got sick). By the time I got to the ER, my temp was 104, and I was really weak.

The only thing I could think of was TSS.

When they released me from the ER, I couldn't even walk, and had to literally crawl on my hands and knees up the stairs to my apartment.

The worst part of TSS isn't the initial 'attack' (although the initial attack is beyond awful)...it's the days after (every muscle in my body hurt to the point that I would cry just to even think about moving...all of my taste buds fell off...my skin looked parched in patches...and over then next 6 weeks all of the skin on my hands peeled off to where I had no fingerprints left (until the skin grew back).

Like I said: TSS is AWFUL.

I have never once given thought to tampons being a risk, other than TSS.

I have such extremely heavy periods that I don't think I couldn't use them. Pads just do not work for me. Sometimes the most absorbent tampon doesn't work for me. What would be an alternative?

I'm with you Chloe. I need super plus tampons AND super plus pads for the first few days each cycle. AND I have to change them every 15-20 minutes on the first day. It's an absolute nightmare. Doing ANYTHING, incuding work, on the first day is terrible since I spend most of the day in the bathroom.
