Smile tanning helped my depression

Hi ladies! I found a helpful aid for depression by accident and thought I'd share it with you. I'd always been told that being in direct light was good for depression. The thing is, it's soooo dang hot here in VA, that I couldn't bear it! When I did go outside, I'd come back in with a headache and all tired! Well, I was in a friend's wedding and wanted to get a little color, so I bought some sessions at a tanning booth place. After 2 days of tanning (about 10 mins each time), I noticed a huge improvement with my depression! (FYI: I'm also on 200 mg/zoloft a day). I had so much more energy, felt sooo much better about myself, and was much more productive. I tanned for the next couple weeks and I continued to feel better! I know about all the dangers of tanning, but I figure going a couple times a week, for like 10 mins each, the risks are worth it if I have enough energy to leave my house!!!!! That's just my opinion though. I guess it's probably similar to what people do with seasonal depression when they use light therapy. Anyways, just thought I'd pass this along.

glad it worked for you. not enough sun is a big problem for depression. being in alaska in the winter (dark for hours and hours) it is common for depression. i am sure that is what i need, just a little sunshine. i was thinking tho, how about a grow light. it works for plants, so maybe i will check into it.

Light therapy has actually been used as a depression therapy for years, usually with an indoor light that you have to spend a certain amount of time in front of daily as a treatment.

However, tanning sounds like a much more pleasant form of treatment- I know I always feel better after getting a little sun.

Good for you! I am glad you are finding your own individual, creative ways to help yourself!

Kudos!

Aimee

I have heard this too, but for me,it's the opposite.
The more sunshine the worse mood and oh the headaches!

I have a real hard time outside in the bright sun.

I'm so looking forward to fall and winter!
(so much cooler too!)

Take care,
