Red face Teen Dealing With Hair Loss - Need Help and Advice

I'm 19 and I'm concerned because my hairdresser pointed out to me that my hair is thinner on the top of my head than the area at the nape of the neck. I suspected I have PCOS for several years now because I have a lot of too low estradiol symptoms (i.e. energy loss, migraines, fat gained mostly around the abdomen, memory and concentration worse before menses, dry nails, mood swings, etc.). I haven't gotten an official diagnosis of PCOS, but there's a family history of ovarian cysts.

I just started Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo and I have been taking it very well so far. Is that enough to help with my hair loss? Or should I try other methods? I want my thick hair back.

Thanks for reading! I am open to any suggestions (though I can't spend a lot of money; I'm a poor college student).

Wish I could help... my hair hasn't gotten to the thin point yet. Best of luck!

Hi The same exact thing happened to me at a salon about a year ago. I never really noticed my hair was getting thinner until my stylist pointed it out...up until that point I had super thick hair so I never really thought about it. It was the most horrible feeling...I know your pain.

As far as a diagnosis goes, there are several different things that could be going on with your body and unfortunately pcos is just one of the many options. Thyroid issues are usually the leading cause of hair loss in women...so I would definitely get to the doctor and have your thyroid checked.

I'm in the process of figuring out if pcos is really what I have. I've been through a series of tests and so far my blood sugar and testosterone levels are completely normal. Still my doctor says that pcos is an option, which completely blows my mind...but thats a whole other topic.

But anyway-VITAMINS have really helped with my hair loss- you gotta be taking a serious multi-vitamin! Unfortunately the average American diet is seriously lacking in nutrition...which is essential for hair growth. Since revamping my diet and adding lots of natural organic foods along with a multivitamin, I have noticed considerable difference in my hair loss. It's not as thick as it used to be, but it sure isn't as thin as it was a year ago either.

I hope this helps, and if you want to talk some more just message me

Eh i'm 15 and i'm having a lot of hair loss... hair is getting really thin and i've had my thyroid checked, it was fine. Though i recently got diagnosed with PCOS so.. i think it's due to that.

Thanks for the replies so far.

It's hard because my hair isn't thin. It's thinner at the top of my head than the nape of my neck, so right now my hair is about the thickness of a quarter when it should be thicker. It's frustrating having do do my part exactly right to keep it skinny. It's really long too (like down to my butt) so that probably helps keep it flat. Then on top of things my scalp is oily so that makes it look flatter.

I've treated my hair well over my entire lifetime. It shouldn't have been falling out (I suspect it started when I was 15 or so) because I have virgin hair (never dyed) and I rarely heat style it.

I doubt I have thyroid issues because I maintain a healthy BMI of about 21 and consider myself "skinny" (5'3" tall and 120 pounds). I don't even exercise much because my migraines (which is one of my many low estradiol symptoms) control my life. My diet is relatively healthy except for a few sweets here and there. I take Women's 1-A-Day multivitamin, 2 capsules of Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega, 20 mg Prozac, and my birth control (Ortho Tricyclen-Lo) daily.

I have a family history of ovarian cysts, so I'm really hoping that the PCOS is the only cause of this issue (and my other low estradiol symptoms). So far the Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo has been interacting well with me (the only side effect is a little nausea) and I'm hoping that it will decrease the free androgens (hence the male pattern thinning) I have and help me regrow my scalp hair.

I'm wondering if I should try that Ookisa stuff in the meantime...
I suspect I have PCOS. I'm 19 years old and currently taking Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo to combat low estradiol symptoms like hair loss, migraines, low energy, etc. My menstrual cycles are relatively regular (28 days) and I maintain a BMI of 21.
