teens and metformin My 18 year old daughter had been on Yasmin/spironolactone for 2 years with good results (decrease in acne, regular cycles, decreased chin hair with laser treatments.) It was suggested by a dermatologist to try going off the bcp at age 18 to see if she still needed it. She is not sexually active and wears size 6. She has been off it for 2 1/2 months now (continuing 100 mg spironolactone.) The acne is not bad at all, but she has not had a cycle as of yet. Our family doctor is not concerned, and stated that she does not prescribe metformin to nonobese teens, but would consider it if we really want to try it.
My question is does anyone know of any nonobese teens with PCOS symptoms that have been taking metformin with good results? I have done a lot of reading on this topic, and metformin seems to be the most "natural" way of regulating the hormones in that it helps with regular ovulation, to get the body working the way it is supposed to, versus synthetic hormones in the bcp. We have seen 3 doctors (two reproductive endocrinologists) over the years and none of them recommended metformin. Any information would be appreciated! |
