So, I've been having what I think are tension headaches...every single day. I have tried Excedrin, Advil and the Head On (a homeopathic headache gel that you rub on your forehead) and nothing seems to kill the pain. I can feel the tension in my back and neck, and I just can't seem to get my muscles to relax, and I am guessing that's what's causing the pain. It starts as soon as I wake up in the morning.
I have a lot of stress right now, from work and some financial difficulties. I already take Zoloft to reduce anxiety.
Anyone else deal with this? How do you get rid of your headaches? Is there such a thing as an OTC muscle relaxant, that would help reduce the muscle tension?

i used to suffer big time from tension headaches. and no medicine i tried worked at all.
but i have found a few things outside of allopathic medicine that might help.
try putting on some cinnamon incense. cinnamon is ruled by aries, which rules the head. (go figure i'm an aries with a headache problem!).
and have some black tea. i've found its great for relaxing muscles when i either have back pain or tension headeaches, sometimes even migraines.
keeping warm helps too.

2g metformin per day
Orlistat
Vaniqua
3g Tranexamic Acid per day (when on period)
i'm so sorry you have this problem. i have it too. i get headaches almost daily but about once a week i'll get a horrible tension migraine that starts in my neck and shoots straight up the side of my head. i usually take ibuprofen and excedrine to combat it right away but it has NEVER done any good.
up until this morning i had this horrible headache for the past 24 hours and nothing would get rid of it. i ended up in total with about 8 ibuprofens, 4 excedrines, and 1 benadryl. i also applied BioFreeze (a roller that relieves muscle discomfort) to my neck/head areas, used a cold compress, and stayed in bed in a dark room all day. towards the end of the night i was throwing up from the pain. i woke up this morning with it gone, i don't know what finally got rid of it truthfully, because the meds didn't seem to do a thing.. it just finally left on its own like usual. i can't FUNCTION when i get these headaches and ended up calling in sick yesterday from work.
funny thing is, i am not stressed out. have no tension. just normal life. i WAKE UP from a good nights rest with these "tension headaches" and then it snowballs into a migraine as the day progresses.
I know what you mean: I've had these muscle-type headaches since I was a teenager.
Some things I do:
Weight bearing exercises for your upper back/shoulders/neck. Get some two or three pound dumbbells and do these once or twice a day. It helps strengthen the muscles and loosen them up. Don't over do it!
Biofreeze helps too. I get mine from my massage therapist, but I have also seen it in pharmacies (it's over the counter: it's a cooling gel that helps me to keep from tensing up from the pain).
Also, have you tried ThermaCare patches/heat wraps? It can be really awkward to get them in just the right place, but they can help you get through it too.
I see a massage therapist once a month, which I've been doing for the past six years. I used to have to go once a week, and barely made it between appointments, so it has gotten a bit bitter. I pay 40 dollars for a half hour upper back/neck massage, and it is worth it to me (even if I have to cut out other things) to save that 40 dollars a month and get some relief. I never feel 100% better, but taking the edge off is a big help.
The only thing that helps me with those is to stop taking everything you have been taking and get some muscle relaxers from your doctor instead. Just take those (before bed) and you will wake up feeling better and better until it's gone. At least I do. Good luck...those things are awful.

I have problems with tension headaches too. Sometimes I like to lie in a hot bath with my neck and shoulders in the water. Or I lie down with a hot water bottle under my neck.
I've recently started treating myself to regular massages on my neck and shoulders to try and release my tension.
Becca- if the black tea is working, it may actually be from the caffeine in it. Sometimes I'll get the wicked nasty kill-me-now headaches, and it's from caffeine withdrawal.
I have CHRONIC headaches. So does my sister. Sometimes pills work, sometimes muscle relaxers work, sometimes a hot bath works, sometimes only sleep. The other thing that can work is a washcloth on the back of the neck, sometimes hot, sometimes cold, depends on the headache. (If I'm queasy feeling too, usually the cold does wonders.) My favored remedy though, is like TechLady said though, muscle relaxers. Oh sweet relief!!

I have them all the time too. Sometimes I get really sick and start puking everywhere. Like to day and my mother talking down to me again didn't help either. (she does not view PCOS as a troubling syndrome nor does she believe I should be depressed at all). Then the headaches get even worse.
Thanks, ladies! I often wonder if I end up with the headaches so often partially because of pain relievers--those rebound headaches that you hear of, from taking too many pain relievers.
I've been trying to have a little caffeine every morning, and that seems to help, plus one of the ladies who works at our guest services desk gave me a neck massage last week, and I didn't have a headache for 5 days! So, it's gotta be muscle tension. For those of you who get massages, do any of your health insurance companies cover all or part of them? Like medicinal massages, if you have an MDs directive that you need them?

Sometimes massage will be covered by insurance under "massage therapy" or "physical therapy". You do need to have a smooth doctor who is willing to work with you on wording with the insurance, and have them say that massage therapy is a more long term treatment than pills. Sadly, Tricare won't cover massage therapy that I've found- I've looked for it on the site. :\

I get a certain amount of $$ a year from my med insurance company, and I need a doc's note to say that it is necessary for me. For me, it is! I get really tight, crazy tight neck and shoulders. It's awful.
I would second the opinions that suggest working out--but I would also specifically recommend doing some yoga. Yoga is amazing for letting everything unkink. Even just 15 min of yoga a night might really make a difference. A lot of neck and shoulder tension comes from not breathing properly--for me, anyway, it comes when I am breathing through my nose in a very upper-chest kind of way--it just brings my shoulders up and up and then I realize I'm wearing my shoulders as earrings.
So to counteract that I try very hard, during the day, to really breathe from the depth of my belly, and really try to keep my shoulders loose and down my back. It is easier said than done, and I have to remind myself about it all the time.
Combining a real attentiveness to how you are breathing with 15 min of gentle stretching at night, following up by a hot water bottle, might realy help out. The important thing is to move slowly and carefully when stretching, and make sure everything is warmed up first.
Good luck hun!
