Question Terribly hungry, craving sugar, carbs, etc.

I haven't really been following any kind of diet lately. Last summer I stopped drinking soda, and I've been doing pretty good (maybe having one 20 oz. soda every couple weeks or so). As a result I lost about 15 lbs. I try to watch what I eat as well. I try not to snack, and eat actual meals as opposed to just eating random stuff when I get hungry. But it isn't a very "strict" diet as far as, if I do eat sweets or whatnot, I don't beat myself up about it. And I really don't pay attention to how much I actually weigh.

Anyway, the past couple of weeks I have been seriously craving all sorts of sugar and carbs. I have literally been living off Rice Crispies and Corn Chex (luckily I can't stand to put sugar on my cereal, so I eat them plain with milk). I have also been eating a lot of peanut butter sandwiches. It's just what I've been feeling hungry for, you know what I mean? Last night at work (I work at a mall), I was craving soda seriously bad, and I killed off a large Coke from McDonald's and a 32 oz. orange soda from Mrs. Fields. I haven't drank that much soda in one "sitting" in months. As a result, I got a headache.

But I haven't really been hungry for "real" food. Nothing sounds good to me, except foods like cereal, peanut butter sandwiches, or any kind of candy really. And I am more or less always hungry to some extent. It's really starting to suck. And I am really starting to feel bad because I don't want to gain back what little weight I've lost.

Any advice?

Hi there,

I get the same problem too. I don't want anything. I think of something and all I can think is that I don't want to taste that. NOt really hungry and when I am I am not satisfied with what I ate because it wasn't what I wanted. My only advice is to make sure you eat right during this time. It will pass but sometimes it takes a while and sometimes it doesn't. I keep baby carrots (sweeter) and celery (can have PB that way) close at hand. No matter what you eat you want want it or whatever so you have to just bear with it.

Sorry if no help...I know how fustrating this thing is.

Good luck.

How are your blood sugar levels? Are you IR resistant? Could be your body is trying to "self-medicate" for low blood sugar...I know my body does that. It's kinna like all these weeks you've been drinking a soda now and again and your body has stored the memory of the little sugar "buzz" it got from that. So now your body knows it needs a bit of sugar, it remembers that the soda has done that in the past, and it marshalls all your "screaming cells" together to announce that your body needs soda....lots of soda....right now....immediately!

And it could have to do with the seasons changing. That can throw some stuff out of balance like your serotonin and melatonin, and if one thing is out-of-whack, other stuff can get out of balance as well. So could be your melatonin got a bit off, which got your insulin a bit off, which means your body is trying to "fix" it. (How's your mood and sleep habits....that's an easy quick check on your melatonin and serotonin.)

That's my not-so-expert advice.

Are you PMSing... I am and I could murder anything I am not supposed to have... e.g. lots of carbs, sugar... blah...

I have no remedy for it! My strong-will is rapidly diminishing!

I don't know. I don't think I've ever been tested for it, aside from the bloodwork I had done when I was originally dx'd. My Dr. never mentioned that I could be.

As far as mood and sleep goes...they both generally suck. :p I get moody a lot (sad, crying at the drop of a hat, etc.), and I vary between being an insomniac and sleeping 12 hour stretches at a time (and STILL being tired after that). I'm not sure what that means.

In theory, it could very well be PMS. I hadn't really been paying attention, but I am about to start the sugar pills in my pack of BCPs. But I don't recall having funky cravings before with PMS, besides wanting the odd Hershey bar now and then.

I guess I could just force myself to eat "good" foods, no matter what I am craving. But that sucks, because that's not what I'm getting hungry for, lol.
