Default Test for hypothyroid?

Although I have been tested at least 3 times by 3 different doctors, I still think I have a thyroid problem. Each test came back "normal". 3 of my 5 sisters have throid problems along with at least 2 of my nephews. The 2 nephews with hypothyroid are actually the children of the 2 sisters who do not have thyroid problems. Anyway- I have a new insurance policy which means a new doctor. I want to be tested again for my thyroid. I tend not to always believe the doctors because based on test results, I was also told I did not have PCOS. It was not until my newest gyno did an ultra sound that I was finally diagnosed. My question is this: I know that thyroid tests can come back normal but there is additional testing that can be done. Can someone please advise me as to what exactly I should ask for whem I go to see this new doctor. I have some symptoms including inability to lose weight, dry brittle hair with premature graying, fatigue, etc. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not sure - I've was dx with Hypothyroidism 4 years ago. All I know is that on the blood testing order form, I think it just called for a TSH Test. I think this covers TSH, T3 and T4 testing?

Here's a website I found that covers Thyroid testing:
Thyroid Testing

It seems odd that all 3 tests would show up a false negative, but it can't hurt to have a 4th test.

I only get tested a few times a year usually, but now that I'm pregnant - i will get tested more often. Was tested at the start of my PG, will be tested next week at 21 weeks and then some more times, but not sure when.

Good Luck!

Most doctors believe that TSH is all that is needed to diagnose a thyroid problem. However, I would insist on also having your T3 and T4 tested.

Also, what was your TSH? Were your T3 and T4 tested? Get the numbers. Some docs are not up-to-date on the latest ranges outlined by endocrine societies.

Good luck, and let us know when you get the numbers!
