Default Test results and a crummy doctor

I'm having a hard time with understanding my test results. Almost everything came back perfect. My fasting insulin should be between 0 and 16 and it was 3. My testosterone levels are only slightly higher than should be like less than 5 higher. And i need to get my cholesterol down (on the verge of high cholesterol). I only have the weight, acne and hair issues of PCOS and its really frustrating to me.

There was really no point to that i just realized. I guess i just needed to vent. My doctor just puts me on BCP like its going to help. I asked her to refer me to a nutritionist and she told me that she didnt want me to see one because i would be labelled diabetic. then she had the nerve to chuckle and say "most of my weightloss patients are in there 40's."

I wanted to yell at her and tell her that she should be glad that im 18 and asking for help instead of 40 and pretty much unhelpable. But she walked out of the room before i could! UHHH!!

She might reckon that if you got labeled diabetic you would be treated in a way that wouldn't be helpful to you, whereas if you could get your weight down without being labeled diabetic it might save you a lot of trouble and sort out the insulin problem to a very large extent as well.

Your doctor didn't explain herself very well, but that's not to say she was necessarily wrong.

August: I know that people are still helpable at 40. She just made me feel that way with her comment of most of her patients being 40. Its really frustrating to be told that you can't be helped when you know you need it.

Joyblack: She told me to use weight watchers or something like that. I'm 18 and out on my own. I can't afford that stuff. She just left it at that. I'm definately looking into getting a different doctor.

Thanks for saying so!

I actually do understand where you are coming from - it seems I wasted a lot of time (years and years) being exactly where you are right now - and it seems like we have some of the same issues - weight and acne (my acne cleared up around age 30 which is a total blessing that I have never gotten used to) - I think I have more issues with insulin than you do and less with excess hair.

My understanding is that the normal reference range is not necessarily a reflection of what is healthy - I understand that for some of the androgens for women - the upper end of the "normal range" is actually higher than what is desirable to be healthy - so if you are slighly above that range . . . . that might be an area of concern -- especially since you complain of acne and hair issues. You might want to do more research on what the numbers really mean and what is a desirable range to be in.

You don't seem happy to have been prescribed the pill - I remember feeling the same way once like the doctor was just giving me the pill to pacify me instead of trying to deal with the real problem -- I've done a bit of research and that is not the way I feel about it anymore -(although some people who have also done research on it still feel that way) - for me being on the right formal (for me) of the pill has been one of the most effective things I've tried for managing my PCOS (others have had different experiences).

The pill has its advantages and disadvantages (one of its main disadvantages in that it seems to make insulin resistance a bit worse - although if I understand correctly at this time you do not seem to have a serious problem with IR - good for you!) -- Some women with PCOS respond very favorably to being on the pill and I count myself as one. If you are one too and you can find a formula of the pill that is well suited for you - perhaps low (or even anti) androgen (perhaps monophasic since that seems to be what is recommended for PCOS) and with the right balance of estrogen to progestin for you - it might be very helpful for the acne and the hair (maybe - its sort of hard to predict which treatment options you will respond best to). Trying the pill might be a place to start if there are no moral objections - you might want to research the possible risks and benefits for yourself

I agree with you that you probably should have been referred to a nutritionist - (And good for you for wanting to!) I really did not get the reason about being labeled a diabetic. I hope that the nutritionist happens for you with the next doctor you see -- there is some good information in the diet and exercise section of soulcysters (which would not necessarily replace the need for a nutritionist - you could think of it more as an adjunct) - and you might also at least take a look at fitcysters.com - there is good information there too - especially if you are interested in doing more on the exercise front.

I'm 41 and don't consider myself unhelpable, btw.

Why are you upset? Your glucose tolerance and testosterone are normal -- that's a good thing. With normal blood sugar why would the nutrionist label you a diabetic?

The pill will regulate your cycles and might help with the facial hair. It is the most common treatment for PCOS, regardless of age (I've been on the pill for 20 yrs).

Honestly, all the nutritionist is going to tell you is not to eat sugar and simple carbs (no white bread, white pasta, obviously sugary things, etc). And with your high cholesterol they would tell you not to eat saturated fats (beef, cheese, etc). There are gazillions of books and articles on these topics and on this board. My personal favorite is Mark Hyman's Ultrametabolism (and the cookbook to match). I've seen a nutrionist -- this is what she told me (she was very good, but it was more like seeing a shrink for me because I already knew everything she was telling me because I like to research things myself).

Hun, If you are wanting to loose weight and eventually have a baby, find another Dr that will treat you the way you deserve. I am not saying that they mistreated you, but if you are uncomfortable, then you will always question what they do. My Dr knows I post here and read alot and I mean alot about PCOS. I go to him with ideas, he researches them then we try them. I made the mistake of being on the pill for 20 years and now can't squeek an egg out. Not to say u are like me, but I just wanted to make a point. Be able to talk about everything and anything with your OB. That is sooooo important to your treatment. PM me if you would like to chat...hugs

Did she test your thyroid, it is possible you may have a Hypothyroid as well. That may explain some of the weight issues. I am now 33 yo and started this almost unbearable journey at 19 yo. I went through many docs thinking I was a hypochondriac with so many symptoms. I have to say at least she tested all the right things to diagnose you for PCOS. It is very common to also have Insulin Resistance with PCOS. I highly recommend the Insulin Resistance diet, there are books available. This is different than diabetes. Also, exercise is very important; it will lower your hormone levels as well as help you lose weight.

Good luck!!
