Default Test results question

Not sure if this is in the right place. However, I was wondering about my blood test results. I just read another post about how to know if you are IR (divide glucose level by insulin level and if it's above 5, then you are IR). According to this calculation..I am not IR. My Insulin was 21 and my Glucose was 89. This number is 4.24. However, in the comment section on my results it says,

"Reference range (12 HR fast): 2 to 15 UU/ML (Mean: 6 uu/ml) The Insulin level should be interpreted in conjunction with the blood glucose level."

So, I took this to mean that since mine was 21 uu/ml (above 15), that I was IR. But, according to the calculation I explained above, I am not IR.....

....so which is it?

i remember reading about this ratio when i was first diagnosed. I did a search but can't find that info for the life of me. I think it was the opposite though- for instance the normal glucose is 80-100, while insulin is under 10, so ratio should be 8-10. I believe the lower the ratio is, the higher you are insulin resistant, my labs were glucose 89, fasting insulin 37- ratio 2.4. I remember when i read that info and figured it out, it would have made me highly insulin resistant. I'd like to read it again if you can locate it.

I just went and reread that post and if the dividend is less than five you are IR, so you would fall just into it.

I just pulled results out and the range listed on mine is 3-28 uiu/ml, I wonder why the expected / normal ranges are so drastically different.

ok, just did a quick internet search and found a research article that states that a ratio of fasting glucose to fasting insuling of under 4.5 is the single best screening test result for insulin resistance. Here's a link, it's a pdf file, so hope it comes over. http://intl-jcem.endojournals.org/cgi/reprint/83/8/2694

Wow. Thanks so much. It makes sense now. So, I am IR (which I thought all along I was). If I can only get the dumb metformin to start working for me! UGH!
