I take Met, have non-trad pco, and was having trouble with either my monitor or my blood yesterday. It was clotting too fast so that the monitor kept reading insufficient sample. I tried 4x and same thing (had plenty of sample) - that's another long story - I had thrombolia tests done this morning to check that out.
I don't usually test, just when I feel I'm having hypo symptoms because that's basically what my endoc. wanted me to use it for. So I had one strip left and decided to test on DH to see if it was really malfunctioning...and his blood sugar came up as 267!!???
My question is, because he had just eaten dessert about 10 min. before does that matter? I've seen varying ranges for GTT, fasting, 1 or 2 hrs. post eating, but don't know what immediately after eating should be.
Could one test be a fluke?? Has anyone ever had a malfunction on their monitor?? He doesn't have any symptoms - except I've commented on his feet & his lack of quick healing (gets blisters from walking that ulcer). He also told me his dr. told him his sugar was a little high at one point. That was years ago. I nag him occasionally to get himself checked out again. He's also got male factor infertility, so I suppose that could have something to do with diabetes.
If he is diabetic, at this level, could metformin be just as good as insulin? Him on insulin would be really difficult. He is a train conductor, and it would be hard for him to carry & inject insulin, test, etc. & I have a feeling he wouldn't be compliant.
I'm hoping this is just a bad dream.

You could try testing his sugar 2 hours after eating. If it is about 120 that is high. Type II Diabetics can take glucophage and other insulin meds.
Since he had just eaten something super sugary, I would try again. And if it is high, send him to the Dr. Or if you are worried already, maybe the Dr is the way to go.
Good luck, I hope everything is ok.

Thanks Sarah. I'm hoping it was just the sugar but it's a relief to hear if he does have diabetes it can be controlled with glucophage/met. I have to wait till tomorrow when my strips come in from my insur. carrier to test him again.
Thanks again.

A "normal" person will NEVER have a reading over 200 unless they are on steroids or have some condition causing it.
It is possible that your meter was off, although not the most likely thing.
It would be prudent to get him in for a glucose tolerance test as soon as possible.
Hopefully it was just a fluke on the meter! But best to find out sooner rather than later.
Anybody can have a reading in the 200s if they've eaten quite a bit of carbs just 10 minutes before testing. The key is to test 2 hours after eating and see what the reading is then. A person without diabetes will have processed the food and their glucose reading will be normal.
I'd test him again 2 hours after a meal (making sure he doesn't have a snack during those 2 hours) and if it's high, then get him checked.
Just from my own research and experience -- a 'normal' persons blood glucose does go up when they eat but it should not go over 180. A random reading of 200 does not mean he IS diabetic, but it does mean that he needs to see his doctor and get properly tested as soon as he can.
Random Blood Glucose Test
You don't have to fast to have this test, which is sometimes used if symptoms are present. Blood samples are taken shortly after eating or drinking. A blood glucose level of 200 mg/dl or higher points to diabetes, but it must be confirmed on another day with a fasting plasma glucose, an oral glucose tolerance test or another random blood glucose of over 200.
