Are there ways to test for diabetes without getting a blood test?

There might be... but the standard, most reliable tests are all serum (blood) tests. Since diabetes is your body's inability to control blood sugar and make insulin, it seems like that would be the only way to test for it.

In order to diagnose diabetes you will have to have bloodwork or a series of bloodwork. Sometimes they look at the A1C, or they can do a 3 or 2 hour glucose tolerance test. How can you tell you are diabetic without testing the sugar in your blood? That is what they look for.

For some types of diabetes, they can do urine tests, but it's not very common. They are currently testing out saliva and breath tests to try to diagnose many diseases, but generally you have to get blood drawn.
It's not so bad. You usually will get a fasting plasma glucose test and then a glucose tolerance test. I believe that when they do the fasting plasma glucose test, they'll use that same blood for the A1c, but I'm not sure. The glucose tolerance test is the worse, as you have to chug nasty syrup (think the stuff that is mixed with carbonation at fast food joints to make soda fountain drinks) in 30 minutes or so... and then get poked a couple of times after varying intervals.
