My hair loss tripled during the first month of BCPs. I was going out of my mind. Then it taperd off and the hair loss is back to slow and gradual. The thinness is very noticeable now but every few months I notice that it's becoming more and more obvious. I use to have a few hair styles that would somewhat hide it. Now, there are none.

Points: 832.00 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 832.00 | for hypothyroid sisters with hair loss If any hypothyroid sisters with hair loss are taking synthroid (or it's generic form) of thyroid supplement alone, they may find it is not helping with hair loss from that, any!
Many docs, even well-meaning ones, will always tell you that T4 (synthroid, et al) is the best choice for you because they have been taught to believe that by the companies who make it.
HOWEVER, I have found that many, many, many people benefit from a t4 and t3 combination ...and in some cases t3 alone!
I am not an expert, just a person who is hypothyroid ......and ever member of my family is hypothyroid too! So I've researched this a lot.
My hair loss was much more severe when I took synthroid. Great doctors argued with me, telling me that synthroid is "bioidentical" (exactly the same chemical as is in the body).
This may be true, but it did not help me feel better at ALL.
When I began taking a combination thyroid supplement, which is the active form of thyroid (T3), ALL of my hypothyroid symptoms improved.
Some docs have been taught that T3 is dangerous to your heart, especially if you're overweight,, but if you read up on it, that is actually not proven and very controversial, but many doctors don't realize that. In fact, it's MORE dangerous to your heart to have hypothyroid conditions that are not responding to medical treatment.
I have found low-dose T3 to make a gigantic difference in my life. One doctor I met had me on sustained-release t3 for awhile ( www.drrind.com) which was fabulous, but that's hard to find.
Armour thyroid is made from animals which turned me off at first, but it's potential benefit is that it contains complete thyroid substance. There are actually SEVERAL thyroid hormones T1, T2, T3, and T4. They don't even know what 1 and 2 do yet! Armours contains small amounts of those as well as T3 and T4.
Another option might by Thyrolar, which is basically a combo of T3 and T4. If I took that, I'd probably supplement it with a low dose over-the-counter thyroid glandular supplement.
Hope this helps,
X
p.s. VERY low doses of T3 helped me a hundred times more than HIGH doses of T4! T4 actually made me feel terrible and doctors actually said "It CAN'T be making you feel bad; it's just like the natural hormone in your body." Well, they were wrong. =)

You mention in your posting: "As I will discuss below, hair follicle sensitivity is highly treatable".... that's exactly what I suffer from and am desperate to see how I can treat it. However, I can't see the passage where you discuss the treatment of follicle sensitivity... please can you point me in the right direction?
would be much appreciated
many thanks,
Diana

Points: 134.00 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 134.00 | I did not see this anywhere so I thought I would post the warning...(m) I learned while taking Glucophage 1500mg (another form of Metformin) that ot can cause hair loss. I began lossing my hair after 3 months and it was in clumps by the 5th month. I learned that it prevents your body from absorbing your proper daily dosage of Vitamin B which is needed for quality hair growth. I immediately started taking Vitamin B Complex and once I was able to stop taking the Glucophage my hair gradually stopped falling out. One year later there is a huge difference. Just thougth I would put the info out there. Oh and the info is at this link... http://www.ovarian-cysts-pcos.com/gl...rmin-pcos.html

I use the shampoo, conditioner and advance therapy for extremely thinning hair. You rub the product on and leave it in. I have noticed small hair follicules where I was missing some. I also notice I have ALOT more hair loss when I stop using it. They have introduced and new line that helps to smooth curly and dry hair too.
Good luck. |

here is one of many articles i found on the link between the two if anyone is interested: http://www.twinlab.com/retailereduca...al02-13-04.pdf

I thought it was because I'm past my twenties and are getting older that hair loss just comes naturally! I lose a handful of hair every time I wash it and several in my hairbrush and a few threads around the house during the day. I really didn't realise this is another symptom of PCOS. |

Points: 134.00 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 134.00 | I read an article that said zinc slows hair loss and facial hair. It recommended a zinc supplement and dandroff shampoo like head and sholders that has some form of zinc in it. I have been taking the zinc vitamins and using head and sholders for three months and I have noticed a much slower regrowth of my facial hair and less fallout.
I also heard that zinc can help for infertility. I was shopping and over heard a lady tell another lady that her daughter tried all the fertility drugs and had no luck, until she heard about taking zinc. She said that her daughter tried it and it worked. I wanted to jump in and ask as many questions as I could but I didn't feel comfortable interrupting.

just thought i would add my 2 cents..my hair loss is because of hypothyroidism and most likely excess toxins/stress on the body (adrenal fatigue)
i have high estrogen, low progesterone and low testosterone..i don't really have much excess facial hair but i do have excess body hair. maybe i used to have high testosterone - no idea.....but taking care of my hair and health is helping - esp. lack of stress.
i'm not taking any hormones at the moment...i am taking thyroid and b vit supplements + multivit with agnus castus, efas and iron. looking to take progesterone cream soon. will keep you guys updated.
