Well I found out that all my lab levels were fine so they didnt cause my hair loss. But the 50# weight loss did. The dermatologists says it will correct itself so I am waiting for that.
Hezzer's first post said "hair follicle sensitivity is highly treatable". What treatment is that?
I've been diagnosed with PCOS. ALL my hormone levels are normal, I'm not overweight and yet the chin hairs (and in other areas too) are spreading. Also, spironolactone makes my potassium levels dangerously high so I can't take it at all, not even at a low dose. Is there any other treatment besides topical and temporary solutions?
Help!
[quote=Hezzer]Here's some information I found when I ran a search on the web.
Flutamide/Eulexin for Hirsutism
"Side effects are listed for treatment with flutamide: loss of libido, impotence, hot flashes, hypertension, diarrhea, GI disturbances, anorexia, confusion, depression, drowsiness, anxiety, nervousness, anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia macrocytic anemia, methemoglobinemia, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, hepatic encephalopathy, jaundice, hepatic necrosis, liver failure, rash, injection site irritation, erythema, ulceration, bullous eruptions, epidermal necrolysi, gynecomastia, edema, neuromuscular symptoms, pulmonary symptoms, GU symptoms, malignant breast tumors."
This stuff made me so sick, I am 22 years old and normally really healthy. I took Flutamide for 3 days, I had hot flshes, and I couldn't think clearly. I couldn't put together cohesive thoughts when I was taking it, it made me so fatigued. I would only recommend taking this drug as a last resort, becuase the way I see it, if it is strong enough to help in treating prosate cancer, it is really strong and patients need to be closely monitored while on Flutamide.

honey this post really made me feel sad. i'm so sorry you feel so distressed. i understand. the whole facial hair issue has drained my self esteem so much. BUT, there ARE things you can do for it. get your hormones under control. take birth control pills, and also ask your doctor about an antiandrogen which stops the facial hair growth from getting worse. then, talk to your parents about getting electrolysis or laser hair removal. explain how hard this is for you. maybe they will help you afford permanent hair removal. don't worry, there are solutions and ways to deal with this. you aren't alone.
I have to say I'm so glad I decided to find all of you! I have had facial hair for years, many many years. I had no idea it was treatable until I went to my doc a few months ago...I just thought it was passed from one generation to another and nothing could be done about it. I have been on Spiro and Metformin for about 2 months now...love the results...facial hair is slowing incredibly...I expect to have to pluck but nothing grows back!
I've never had the hair loss...but the facial hair has always been a problem because I am AA and the ingrown hairs and bumps have always embarassed me.
Even though my testosterone levels are low to normal now, I still think that as far as DHT levels are concerned, I have a lot. So I'm going to start taking saw palmetto, which I've heard lowers DHT.
Maybe the hair growth is something to do with receptors. I went to a herb shop and I told them I was estrogen dominant. He said something that shocked me. He said that the real way to balance this out is to take more estrogen. I said what? Then he went on about receptors fighting for the estrogen hormones therefore leaving more progesterone receptors behind. I think I said that right.
Has anyone else heard of something like this?

G
G,
I tried that, and it did not help me. Maybe I needed to up the doseage. I also have the bump problem. I use a product called Skintight to help me control the bumps, but it is not 100%. Glad it helped you though. I'm glad thgat not all hope is gone. What was your doseage??

I was diagnosed with pcos in June of 2005, I have been experiencing hair loss since I was about 16, I am now 25. I am so worried that I may become bald. I have become more self conscious about that than my weight. I am now using Rogaine, but my hair seems to be getting thinner and thinner. I have considered transplants but I feel I don't have enough hair to spare even in the back. I guess what I am wondering all around is there any hope? I really don't want to be an obese, bald woman. IT'S SCARY!!

Sorry to hear that. If rogaine is not working, try something else. Are you using rogaine for men or women? It is better to use rogaine for men from what I heard. You have to heal yourself on the inside too, but that takes special care from a licensed doctor. Hope you find the solution you need.

I also started my hair loss young. I had elevated testosterone levels. I have tried everything. Metformin did lower my Testosterone. It helped most of my PCOS symptoms, except the hair loss. I started Flutamide this past June. Since starting it, I have not had any more hair loss cycles. I don't notice any new hair growth yet. I read that it can take several months. I am hopeful. I hope that you can find something that works for you.

I think the worst part of the problem is not simply the facial hair growth but the fact that society makes such a thing of shaving the face as being a "male" thing. But lots of us shave every day. I'm into my 50s now and I've been shaving since I turned 14 and shaving every day from the time I was 15. In that respect, I suppose I've never known what it's like to be an adult and not have to shave. I've never known what it's like to have a body that society would classify as "feminine" in appearance. But I'm a woman and I've a husband and I've a big family. In some ways, though I may be less "feminine" than them, I've been more successful as a woman than most of the girls I grew up with -- I've more kids than any of them and I've kept the same husband for nearly thirty years and we're still in love. I haven't needed to be successful in being "feminine" in order to be successful as a woman.
