I was diagnosed with PCOS last Friday. The nurse practitioner looked at my labs which were not terribly off the charts and said that I most def had PCOS. That concerned me b/c from what I've read it should take a little more to get to a diagnosis. Is it standard procedure to have an ultrasound performed or do they generally go by lab values? I have REGULAR periods, fine hair growth all over my body with a few coarse hairs on my face. I also have had acne for two years and thinning hair on my head that I thought was a genetic problem.
Does his diagnosis sound legit or should I look into the matter further? He started me on Yaz BC pills. I was reluctant to start metformin and Spirna. so fast. Any thoughts or comments are appreciated.
If you haven't complained of any pelvic problems, there's not really any need for an ultrasound. Having cysts or the "string of pearls" on your ovaries really doesn't prove anything - it's kind of just an observational issue.
Bloodwork and overall symptoms are the best way to dx PCOS, especially if the bloodwork rules out other problems like hypo- or hyperthyroid and Cushing's.
If you feel at all like you don't have PCOS, definitely feel free to get a second opinion. Hope that helps.

I am a newbie thought I'd put my two cents worth in. Never seen a sight where everyone is so open about this issue's. But anyways...
All I had was bloodwork also. And they told me I had PCOS. I have had my blood drawn 4 times before they came to the conclusing. But I had to switch doctors before they even stated doing test on me.
I was also diagnosed with just bloodwork too. My doctor told me that an ultrasound doesn't really mean a lot because you could have PCOS and have no visible cysts show on the ultrasound. But if you think that your symptoms might not be from PCOS then I would ask to get the ultrasound (although this still might not prove anything)
What do you mean by 'not terribly off the charts?' Not trying to attack, just wondering I am similar - whenever I get tests I get told I am only mildly affected. I generally only have a couple of pimples/patches of redness, a couple of hairs growing on my face and belly, and a touch of bloating when I eat too much bread and sweet things (hehe). And I too can manage regular periods for most of the year. But it's definitely PCOS underneath and if you don't treat it, the chances of it getting worse just increase every day.
Hello everyone! My name is Cym and I was also diagnosed with PCOS by my medical history as well as blood work. My testosterone level was 78. The doctors put me on BCP for 8 months and I just recently went on clomid (100 mg) and now they are saying that my testsoterone is up again because AF is still not here. I am confused. Why would they put me on BCP and then take me off? Is this going to continue forever? Does it seem like an effective way to get pregnant? I am so confused but everyone I talk to says I need to relax and give it some time. I am going insane! Thanks for all of your help!
I think my testosterone was around 60. The NP said that it should be around 45. My primary doc did the labwork and sent me a copy and the lab had the value listed under the normal range. I will try the Yaz. I'm not looking to get pregnant now but maybe in the next year or two. My husband is about to turn 31 and I think he's ready..Yikes! I'm almost 29. I really just want to lose this extra fat around my midsection before getting pregnant.
