Can someone please tell me what the state of Texas requirements are for adoption? Or a website that I can go to for information? DH & I are wanting to explore all our options ....
Thanks gals!
Happy Hump Day ...

That is the best website to go to for state adoptions. We used that when we started the foster to adopt process. We went to their free info meeting in our city and gathered allot of useful info. We then found an agency that we are dealing with now and we start our PRIDE classes next month. Are you looking into straight adoption or foster to adopt?
Thank you both!
Amy, we do not know what we want to do at this time. I have always thought that adoption would be out of our reach, however I really don't know why I thought that?!?!?? I think maybe because DH is self employeed & we don't own a home - which I know now does matter - plus people have always said it was $50K plus. Not to mention the fact that neither of us have more than some college education - NO DEGREES.
I would think that foster to adopt would maybe be the best way??? I am not really sure. The other way that I look at the foster to adopt is, even if we do not get to adopt the child in our care, we still got to love him/her & provide them what they need to grow. Does that make sense?
What exactly are you doing Amy? BTW, what part of Texas are you in?

We bought a great book when we were first starting out.
Adopting in America: How to Adopt within One Year by Randall B. Hicks
In the back of the book it has the different state laws & where to find information.
Even international adoption isn't out of your reach...we're definately not rich & we're not paying $50,000. For our adoption that includes 2 weeks in China & 1 week in Boston. You don't need college degrees to adopt anymore & you don't need to own your own home. My DH is self-employed as well and all we had to do was show tax info for the past 3 years (which even if he wasn't self-employed we would have had to show).
Good Luck!
Traci

Traci is right, you don't have to own a house and can be self employed. They just want to see you can financially support the child. We looked into adoption and it was going to cost around $32,000.00. We could not afford that. If we got a loan it would take all our extra income to pay it off and then there is no extra money for the baby. We looked into foster to adopt because we felt that there are SO MANY babies and children out there who are not loved and who are abused. Not that there is anything wrong with straight adoption but for us, we just felt led to go that route. You can check the state website and find an information meeting in your area. We learned so much from that class. We are going through an agency now instead of the state but adoption will cost us $500-$700 and that is just for the attorney fees. Allot of agencies reimburse you for that expense. You also have it reimbursed on your tax return. You can pick the age range you wish to foster to adopt, the race and even the sex. We are going to start trying for an infant. We may have to wait alittle longer but you never know. I am excited about it. We may have to have a couple on a temporary basis. THe agency told us since we are adoption motivated they would place babies with us where it looks like it will be on a permanent basis. Even if it is not, we can have a positive impact on them and just wait for our "forever" child.
We live in Waxahachie which is about 30 miles south of Dallas. What part are you from?
