I was reading through a bunch of these threads the other day and someone mentioned taking acidophilus tabs to help with GI problems with Met. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I bought some that night and for the first time since I went on this blasted medication in January, I haven't had diarrhea every time I eat--in fact, I haven't had it at all! Thank you so much! I'm so glad to have found this site and to be able to learn from all of you!

It wasn't me who mentioned them, but aren't you glad you found them? I take them, have for years. I really find that they help with any kind of digestive upset, bloating, cramping, gas, etc. I don't know what I'd do without them.
Make sure you keep the bottle refridgerator, though. They will last much longer.

Did the tabs work right away? When I first went on met I started at the lower doses and had no problems at all. I thought that I was going to get off scott free and then increased to 2000mg/day and started to have all the GI problems. I have been on the full dose for over a month now and the side effects haven't subsided, so maybe this is something that I should try.

Mimi-mine worked right away. The last time I had really bad diarrhea was the morning of the day I started taking them. I took one that night and 3 times a day since and have felt awesome. I even just had a piece of pizza-heaven! and no problems!!

Most health food or vitamin stores will carry it. They really do work. Good Luck!

This sounds like a great tip. I too have had to stop Met b/c of the side effects. Some things that have also helped my GI issues is Pepogest, which is enteric coated peppermint oil capsules, and drinking ACV with dinner.
Will definitely look into the acidophillus. I've always been scared to try them for some reason, even though I know yogurt has it too.

Hi there, I am going to start metformin again, I had stopped because of all the terrible side effects I was having. I am going to go out later and get these tablets. For anyone who had success with them, did you find it helped with nausea?

Carrie-wish I could tell you. I only had nausea for the first two weeks. My persistent problem has been the diarrhea, so I can't help in the nausea department.

Carrie - some things that helped me with nausea were making sure I took Met with food and if the nausea persisted I would suck on a peppermint Altoid, or take the enteric coated peppermint oil I mentioned above. For some reason peppermint helps me. Hope you find relief.

Okay, so far so good. I went and got some of the acidophilus tablets yesterday. I took 1 last night and 1 this morning and today was the first day that I haven't had GI problems! What a wonderful feeling not to have to plan my entire day around when I'll need to be in the bathroom. Thanks so much for the advice!

Mimi-isn't it nice how immediate the effects are? I was (and am!) so excited!

I'm also thankful for this thread, i was supposed to increase my dose, but after a couple of days of increased dose I cut back again (partly because I kept forgetting to take the 3rd dose) anway, being back on the lower dose didn't help the symptoms go away, they actually seemed to get worse. I tried fermented milk drinks from the supermarket (it was a weekend and that was the best i could do) but they were useless...so after reading this thread I went to the health food store and got some acidophilus tabs - took one this morning and I've just now eaten for the second time today - so far so good!
