Is there a drug that is similar to metformin?

I was wondering if there was a better drug than metformin. IT helps with my mood swings so I was wondering if there was something else out there that would be better. Any ideas?

Hi Cathy,

Your post was a while back, but I thought I would add my two cents just the same.

I'm not sure if there is a "better" drug than Met/Gluc, but there are certainly others worth trying if you are not getting the results you desire from Met/Gluc. I'm with you though, I feel happier and think more clearly on the met.

I'm on Met and finally O'd, but my Dr. had discussed the possibility of trying Avandia or Actos. I've also read there is a new drug combo pill, which includes Avandia and Met. I've read a lot of positive comments about Avandia and Actos, some of the cysters say it really makes one fertile. On the down side, one of the side effects can be weight gain.

Avandia and Actos both help with insulin resistance, but as I understand it, in a different way than Met. I think it is just a matter of finding the best medication FOR YOU.

Lastly, I don't know if weight is an issue for you like it is with me, but my Dr. insists losing weight is the #1 thing I can do, better than any medicine he says. (Don't you hate hearing that!)

Hi just wanted to let you know that I use Avandia 2 4mg a day. It has helped me so much. I started Avandia in July of last year. I also added Clomid in Nov. and I became pg. First time in 14 years it in ended in mc in Jan. But I would have never became pg with out Avandia. I am hopefull that I can start ttc soon. With Avandia. I hope this helps.
