Just wondering... I have two darling daughters (ages 17 and 15). Is it possible that I passed this thing on to them? The very thought of it makes me want to cry.

I know that it is believed to be genetic. There is nothing you can do about genes. However I am the only woman that anyone knows of in my family with this, so it's also possible that it's not genetic. (But I must add that we do not know any of my paternal medical history).

Thanks MLA. I was afraid of that. DD1 is going to see my doc in October and she has alot of the same problems I had as a teen. The good thing would be finding out sooner than I did.

It may not be proven, but I think it does. My aunt has all the symptoms of it. My first cousin has been diagnosed, and my older sister has been diagnosed as well. Personally I think it is!
I think it will be good to get her in to a dr. early. I know it would have been better for me to have started early. I know a lot of PCOS women put a lot of stock in to a low GI diet. There are even books on the right diets for PCOS, that woudl also help your daughter in fighting off symptoms.

My aunts have had problems with conceiving. One coulnd't conceive and the other only managed to have 1.
I ahve just been diagnosed with PCOS.
I have a suspicion that my aunts have some form of PCOS as this seems to run in the family and I have taken on alot of my dad's gene-heck I even have his hair and legs! haha
If it helps, early diagnose will help your daughters to understand and possibly address any PCOS symptoms earlier rather than later
Wow Kat! That is a site that will keep me busy for days. Thanks for the link.
You all have been so incredibly supportive. I will mention it to the doc when we go in. She has several problems that are leading us to a gynecologist at the ripe old age of 17 so I am sure this doc will be good for her.
Thanks again. You all make me feel so blessed.

I believe it is. Myself, my sister, and 3 cousins have it.
There are conflicting schools of thought as to whether PCOS is genetic. Some scientists believe it is an autosomal dominant disorder, which means that inheriting one chromosome with disorder means you will likely express it. Other believe that it not linked to one gene but a series of genes and that pcos requires the inheritance of sequence of genes. Still others believe that it is purely environmental.
All scientists can say for sure is that this disorder exists. The best thing for your daughters whether genetic or not is to watch for symptoms and encourage a super healthy lifestyle.

I agree, and as a mother of a 5 year old, It hasn't even crossed my mind that she may develop it!
I don't think that my mom or grandparents had it, but both of my sisters have it too. I've always thought that was a pretty good argument that it's genetic!
I don't have any sisters, so I can't compare there, but my mom does not have it, nor did my maternal grandmother, not sure about my paternal grandmother, as far as I can remember she has had some chin hairs, but I don't know about other symptoms, she had 5 kids, and as far as I know no complications. Now having said that, I have 2 cousins on my mom's side that have some degree of symptoms, though both of their moms (my mom's sisters) are fine. So I think there might be some genetic link, both of my cousin's with symptoms were born and raised in Mexico, I was born and raised in California, so I think the environmnetal argument is out for my family. That does not however account for the fact that my mom has 5 sisters, and they have a combined 12 daughters, and only 2 have any symptoms. I too hope your daughters did not inherit PCOS, but if they did, well, at least they will get early dx and treatment.
