Question Are they supposed to check for cysts?

Hey everyone.... well I was diagnosed with PCOS a couple of months ago. I guess the doctor just based this solely on blood work. But my question is, are you supposed to be checked for ovarian cysts after that diagnosis? My doctor didnt mention anything about that to me...she even referred me to a gyno, but again, that was never mentioned. Any thoughts? Thanks.

yes, force her to get you an ultrasound; i had to do that with my doctor when i was first diagnosed; you have to be forceful sometimes! OR get a new doctor who will listen to your concerns and give you the proper tests.

Hmm..okay, thanks for replying. But I wonder why she would not mention that? It's like she thinks it doesn't matter if there are cysts ???

Dani, your doc probably figures that it doesn't matter if you have cysts. She might treat you the same either way.

Did she put you on Met? That helps control the hormones that cause cysts. Some birth control pills can help with that, too (but I don't believe in "treating" PCOS with BCPs, so if that was the only "treatment" you were given, find a new doc).

Usually, the cysts themselves aren't too dangerous, as long as the PCOS is under control. They might cause problems when you're trying to get pregnant, though.

I think most dr.s are in no hurry to chech because it doesn't matter. It isn't like there is anything they can do if there are cysts. If you feel like you need to know then I would just ask her/him to let you have the exam. Odds are you will need a pelvic ultrasound at some point having something to do with PCOS and they will check on the cysts then.
