Thin cyster having 2nd miscarriage...need some hope
Brief history: I had painful, irregular AF since I got my AF at almost 14. Went on the pill at 18 and have pretty much stayed on it ever since. I am thin (5'7", 138lbs), but have always had very excessive hair all over my body. Even being on the pill didn't help that much. I've also had my bouts with acne and migraines.
I conceived a son in 1998 on my third cycle of Clomid 50mg. He's almost three. We started to ttc#2 in March 2001. I got pregnant on my third natural cycle where I ovulated on CD28, but I had a missed miscarriage at 9w. After a d&c, three months of wacky cycles, three months back on the pill and three on Clomid 100mg (wasn't responding to 50mg anymore), I got pregnant in March. I am now miscarrying this pregancy at 6w. I'm devastated, but hopeful since my OB is now referring me to an RE. He thinks I have poor egg quality. I demanded several tests that my OB complied with, but when the results came back he was very uninterested in what they meant. He didn't even check for insulin resistance since I'm thin. The two levels I do remember were that my testosterone was 69 and my DHEAS was also elevated at 2.70 something.
I'm hoping that the RE will do some real testing, take me seriously and help me get pregnant and KEEP the baby.
Any positive stories are appreciated. Thanks for reading this far.
i just wanted to say that im sorry for your loss. I think going to the RE is the best choice to have made . OB athough they say they know about pcos really dont spend the time on researce because there to bussy delivering babys. RE on the other hand thats all he/she does.good luck to you.
I'm sorry about the baby! I know it can be a real emotional rollercoaster. I too had difficulty maintaining my second pregnancy. I took twice as much Clomid and it took longer to become pregnant. (Why is it when you're thin and have PCOS they don't think you have any of the side affects?)
Has your doc. checked your prog. level along with your blood test for pregnancy? It should be checked weekly if you are low so that they can give you progesterone (supositiories-sp? I think) to help maintain your pregnancy. I know many with PCOS have trouble with prog. and this has worked for a couple of my friends.
Best of luck with your RE. I'm sure there will be much more help there! God Bless!
Chris

From what I've read, cysters with high testosterone are the ones most benefited by Metformin. Although I have tons of excess hair, my lab results showed testosterone in the normal range--so I am guessing that the RE (we have our first RE appt Tues) will not suggest Met for me. Hopefully your RE will consider it for you.
One thin cyster, Meg (I haven't seen her around in a while), had experienced a m/c after conceiving on Clomid, so when she got PG on Met, she stayed on it through the PG--she had a son in December. Her RE didn't even test her for IR or testosterone, just tried her on the Met! (I believe she got PG using Met & Clomid together) Here's a link for some related research that she gave me: http://blues.fd1.uc.edu/~gartsips/polycyst.htm
May you find the strength to get through this difficult time. Welcome to SoulCysters and thank you for sharing your story. Godspeed!
I also had troubles w/Clomid and ovulated really late as well. I m/c 7wks on Clomid after ovulating quite late as well. My OB mentioned that when you ovulate late and get prg, esp on Clomid, your LH level tends to be quite high and can contribute to the m/c. Did you have your LH checked? High LH is very common in PCOS. Also, the uterine lining isn't quite as good the longer your cycle goes before ovulation. I just stop TTC once I go past a certain cd now in fear of m/c again.
You could try going on injects, if you're up to it. My OB put me on Puregon which is pure FSH. We did this after Clomid. Also, Met with it, though like yourself, I'm thin but am not IR. Puregon helps to keep the LH at bay while stimulating your ovaries. I also agree with the progesterone suppositories. I was told they should be taken from the time of the IUI till the prg test, up until about the 9th wk of prg when the placenta kicks in. This helped me with my prg after my m/c. An added bonus....the Puregon cleared up my skin wonderfully! I keep telling my OB to market it as an acne drug!!! LOL
Here is another positive....I'm also TTC #2 and have been on just the Metformin 1500/day for about 7 wks. I actually ovulated on my own for the first time, though it was cd29. But atlest I'll get a period on my own. My OB is hoping the cycles will get shorter otherwise it's back onto Clomid or Puregon to conceive, hopefully.
I wish all the best. You're not alone in this esp. with TTC #2. I think it's actually more nerve wracking the 2nd time around...
