Default Thin cyster new to gluc-advice?

Hi ladies,
I was dx'd with pcos in Jan 03 by an RE (was told by gyn I didn't have it and I was convinced I did after learning I had "higher end of normal" testosterone levels and I have always been irreg. when not on bcp-so I got it confirmed right away by the RE).

We are ttc; no luck Oing on clomid at 50 mg 3-7, 100 mg 4-8. I'm currently in the middle of taking clomid 100 mg 3-10 this cycle-an extended course to see if it helps at all. My regular RE does not RX gluc unless you definitely test + for IR. My 2 hour GTT results were normal-fasting insulin was 8.2 Two of my insulin levels (at 1/2 hour and an hour after drinking glucola) were actually lower than the normal range. So my current RE wouldn't RX gluc.

I went for a 2nd opinion consult today and this doc was willing to let me try glucophage. I'm starting at 500 mg and doing 1000 mg by next week if I can tolerate it. He would ideally like me to go up to 1500 mg if I can tolerate it. How soon after taking the gluc did/do you notice side effects (GI related)? Just trying to figure out how soon it will start-did you have it right away after starting gluc?

I'm hoping this at least helps a little bit for me. We'll see! I'll keep you posted. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Beth

I think that different people react differently to gluc. Personally, I went on 425mgs for one week, then 850 mg for another week, etc. until I got to 1700mgs. I felt quite nauseus during the majority of the week and would feel better towards the end of the week before I moved up the dosage. It happened to me as soon as I started taking it. It took me a total of 6-8 weeks to stop feeling ill. Now I feel normal and I've been on it for almost 3 months. Unfortunately it didn't do much (or well, anything) to help AF arrive so I'm moving on to injectables. I've read lots of stories on this board of people that felt much worse than me so I feel lucky, but I've also heard stories of people having very little negative side effects.

Good luck!

The good news is that I was able to up to 1000 mg without much difficulty after only 2 days at 500 mg as I was having no side effects. I had planned to start working up to 1500 mg (what my RE would like me to get up to if I can tolerate it) but in the meantime they scheduled me for an hsg, which requires stopping met for 5 days prior. So I only got to take it for 4 or 5 days total so far! My hsg is scheduled for wednesday march 19th so after that i'll be resuming met.

Thanks for the help!!

Beth
