Default Thin cysters and BCPs

I've been taking yasmin for the last 4.5 years or so and am ready to go off of it or at least take a break because I'm starting to think it's doing more harm than good at this point. I've always been thin and only gained a few pounds during my time on the pill, but I've heard stories about people having massive weight gain after going off the pill and that scares me to death. Has any thin cysters had this happen to them? I should mention that I was first prescribed the pill for PCOS so I knew I had it beforehand.

Hi Angel,

I've used Dianette for 8 to 10 years. I went off the pill in Feb 08. I may have gained a bit weight (I'm 5.6, and went from 135-140 pounds to 140-142), but I can't say that's necessarily the reason.
Once you want to get pregnant, you may want to take Metformin, because it should lower the level of androgens (even if you are not insulin resistant) and can regulate your cycles. It takes 3-6 months or even a year to become effective though, so it's good to know this in advance.

I'm afraid I gained weight when I came off Dianette. I'd been 5'7" and 107lbs for years and years, eating loads of junk food and feeling really smug because I never put on weight (I didn't know I had pcos at this stage). When I came off Dianette the weight came on immediately, mainly around my middle and on the tops of my arms. I probably only went up one or two dress sizes, but it was a very strange experience for me, having been in a uk 6 or 8 for so long!

My suggestion would be to go straight on Vitex once you come off the pill. I went on it about 9 months after coming off the pill and it helped me lose a few pounds. If you are still open to the idea of medication, spironolactone might help keep the weight off. I lost a small amount of weight on sprio, including 2 inches from my waist! Also take a load of supplements to prepare your body for the hormonal changes - zinc, green tea, spearmint tea, flaxseed etc. Definitely go straight onto Vitex after stopping the bcp without taking a break in between, I think. I wish I'd known about Vitex when I first came off Dianette. I wonder whether my reaction to coming off would have been so severe if I'd done this.

did the vitex help with your periods too? I tried it but couldn't notice any difference after 2 months, so quit.

Hi,
I went off Yasmin after 9 years on it (like you, diagnosed with PCOS before being put on the pill). No weight gain at all. Also no period, but that is another story!
Like you, I felt worried about being on the pill for so long. Now, am trying to see if I will have a period naturally before trying other meds.

i was on bcp's on/off for 15+ years. yasmin was the last one i used. after i came off bcp's i gained about 15-20 lbs. granted i was 115lbs and am now 130-5lbs. my pcos symptoms also worsened: hair growth, skin issues etc. for me staying on bcp's was good esp. if you are not ovulating on a regular basis.

It helped with my cycles. I was having a period every 50 days and vitex brought it down gradually to 28 days.

Play around with different brands to see which is the best quality, and therefore most effective. I used a brand called Kira which was very effective. At one point I changed to a cheaper one from the local chemist, and my acne got worse again and my cycle got longer. Swapped back to the Kira and it was sorted.
Tinctures are supposed to be good, too.

Hi There...

I was on Camilla for about 5 years after my doctor "thought" I might have PCOS. I was always thin and athletic. Went of the pill to start trying to get pregnant and gained about 25 lbs though exercise and diet stayed the same. The doctor was sure I had PCOS at that point and started me on Metformin. I lost the weight within a month or so and other symptoms subsided as well. Got pregnant after 2 years of trying. Went off metformin at 12 weeks pregnant. So yes, I did gain weight off the pill, likely because it was keeping my PCOS at bay.

I went of my BCP (Loestrin, which is similar to Yaz) 6 months ago after having taken it for 4 years and I've lost 8 pounds. But I have started to have problems with facial hair, just growing in faster, not too much thicker.

I always have the opposite happen. I lose weight when I go off of birth control and gain it like crazy when I am on it. Not really sure why? But I go from 103-105 and I am 5 foot 3 to up to 125!!! It really is depressing since I have less hair and acne on the BCP but I think maybe I need to go off of it since the weight gain makes me feel ugly and just plain heavy. (I gain it all in my boobs and stomach)

Hi there!

The only time I gained weight with a BC pill was when I was on Ortho TriCyclin. Went off of that pill and lost 10 lbs in a week! I have been on Yasmin for 7 years with no problems. I have only gone off of it for a couple of months and my weight did not change.
