Untill this morning my gynocologist had prepared me for the news that i had premature ovarian failure. However i recieved a letter telling me that my results suggest i am a pcos sufferer.
I am really confused and dont know what to expect when i go to the doctors. Am I likely to be on medication for the rest of my life? I dont seem to fit with the stereotyic pcos sufferer. Im 5"7 140 lbs, i dont have acne, im not hairy, my only symptom is that at 20 years old i have only ever had 3 periods, I had an ultrasound done and the scan showed my ovaries were normal (cyst free i assume?!) .
Most of you ladies seem to know so much on this mattter please help, what should i expect to happen to me over the next few months- more tests?? drugs??
Ive tried reading up on the subject, but my symptoms dont match anything i've read about.
i dont know anyone else with this condition.
Thanks Sara.
Maybe your hormones suggest PCOS LH/FSH ratio is normally 3:1., or higher. Mine was 4.1 LH/12.5FSH. I do have hair issues although not everyone does here. Ask him why he suggests PCOS. If I would have known at 20 there would be drastic changes to my diet and medication. I took the BCP to keep everything in line (to cycle) but now at 38 I added Metformin 4 years ago when I discovered this site. My ovaries don't appear cystic on the sonogram, although when my OB did a scope to check them internally she said they were the tiniest little cysts she had ever seen. Basically, not seen on a scan. I hope you get the answers you are looking for and are able to get the treatment you need.
Good Luck!

Honestly, I would ask the doctor what exactly about your test results pointed them in the direction of PCOS and to explain their reasoning to you.
I am not hairy, no real IR problems, have some acne and hair loss, have regular periods..........so..........when my doc put me on metformin I made him explain it to me because it seemed out of whack with my symptoms.
It may be one of those times when they have more information than they are giving you. He showed me the ovarian cysts and said the met was to prevent me from having IR problems in the future.
Ask for a more complete explanation....that's all I can offer.

wow, your story/issues sound VERY familiar. i am 18 and also 5"7 and about 140pds. I had one period when i was 12, then nothing until i was 17 (when i saw a gyn that put me on BPC to get me a period, but they made me REALLY sick). after BCP i went on natural hormones (ogen and prometrium) and they worked sometimes (4 periods in 1 year, not regular at all). i lost a lot of hair after the BCP episode but hair loss has evened out now. Last week i saw an endocrinologist and she put me on metformin. I am already feeling better, am stopping hormones after this prometrium cyle (in about 9 days) and am hoping to get periods with met. It is an insulin regulator, which is what PCOS stems from (insulin imbalance) often times. Good luck to you and would love to hear your story more.
