Thin Cysters TTC - did gaining weight help you get pregnant?
Hi all - Everything online about PCOS seems to talk about the importance of losing weight, but my RE won't even put me on metformin because I'm underweight (5'9" and was 120 earlier this year...trying to work my way up to 125-130lbs). I went on 50mg of Clomid this year, O'd on both cycles and got a BFP on the second cycle. Sadly, it was a chemical pregnancy and I miscarried just shy of 5 weeks. I don't think my uterine lining was too thin b/c I was monitored and it was around 10mm at ovulation. Anyway, I met with a dietician who specializes in fertility to see if there was anything I could do naturally to try to help improve my chances of getting pregnant and staying pregnant, and she recommended that even thought I have PCOS, I should try to put on a few pounds (in a healthy low sugar way) as being underweight can cause low levels of the hormones needed to get and stay pregnant (I think she said estrogen and progesterone). So now I'm trying to put on a few lbs in a healthy way while staying on a low GI diet...and it's not easy! I'm trying to eat more avocados, nuts, etc..and just walk home from work to get a little exercise and not burn too many calories.
I've been thin my whole life, and I'm just having trouble finding answers for thin PCOS since everything seems to focus on women who are overweight with PCOS.
My RE wanted me to take a break from Clomid this month so my body can recover from the m/c, and I'm planning to start again next month.
Anyway, just wanted to find out if anyone out there is in the same situation, and if you were able to get a BFP and stay pregnant!
Thanks so much. It's so nice to have a thin PCOS page on this website
Hi!!!!! I'm so glad you posted!!!! I'm the same weight and height as you and I've been trying to gain weight also in a healthy way (my dr recommended it, said it would give me better quality eggs) but I just can't! I will be starting my first round of Clomid next month... I think chemical pregnancies are not really hormonal but just chromosomal issues, and it can happen to anyone, so I wouldn't think it was an issue for you... well if anyone here knows an answer to kate's question I would also be interested! Kate, my doc also did not want to put me on Met because of my weight...
Hi Almodina! I'm glad you posted, too. As frustrating as PCOS can be, it's been really difficult to find people with my same symptoms. If you don't mind me asking, do you O at all on your own? My cycles usually range from 35-45 days, and I appear to O on my own from the charting I've done over the past 5-6 months, but I don't O until around CD 26. My RE told me that longer cycles can cause "weak" ovulation because the egg is older when it finally pops out. So far Clomid has shortened my cycles to around 30-32 days (I O'd around CD 16 both months). My only other signs of PCOS were the classic "string of pearls" on my ovaries, an LH:FSH ratio of just under 2:1 and a few unwanted hairs (on my big toes and a few under my belly button). Also, are you going to be monitored while on Clomid? From what I've heard, not all OBGYNs will monitor you (mid-cycle ultrasounds, etc), but REs usually do. I would make sure your dr monitors you each month to check for cysts, and to check on your follicle growth. Anyway, best of luck with your first month of Clomid - I hope you get your BFP!
Hi Kate... We are like twins! I do ovulate on my own, and my natural cycles range from 30 to 50 days... I don't ovulate on all of them... And I know when I ovulate because I get the pinching on my ovary, then the EWCM, and finally about a week afterwards my boobs get really sore for a few days which is the progesterone surge... Then I get AF 14 dpo always... but there are some cycles which are annovulatory. My other symptoms are: 2:1 LH:FSH ratio, string of pearl ovaries (not always, they sometimes disappear), and some hair on the same places as you! My OBGYN does plan on monitoring me, I'm on BCP right now because I had a U/S done on CD3 and there was a cyst, so he made me take BCP for a month, and then go back on CD3 to have another U/S, if everything is ok then start Clomid... I'm a bit nervous... but I see it has helped you so maybe it will help me too... Which days did you take it and what dose? When is your next cycle starting? I'm sure you will get a sticky BFP soon, chemical pregnancies aren't usually repeated! Good luck!!!!!
Wow, we really have a lot of the same symptoms! The other reason my RE is making me take this month off of Clomid is because I also had a cyst on my ovary after the miscarriage (leftover from the previous cycle, which can sometimes happen on Clomid). It's hard to have to wait to start again, but I think my body probably needed some time to rest. I bet Clomid will work for you, though I was nervous before taking it, too, but it's really not bad at all, and it's kind of nice to relax and let the doctors do the monitoring and worrying for you! Do you temp every day? If I were you, I would maybe temp on Clomid (I use fertilityfriend.com, which is great). It's not really necessary since they are monitoring you, but it helped me pinpoint the day I O'd so I'd know the next month (you tend to O around the same time each month, although that's not always a given). I didn't temp after I O'd and got the temp shift on my BFP month, but I just personally liked to know exactly when I O'd. The dr. should also tell you when to start using the OPKs. You usually go in for a mid-cycle U/S around day 12, 13, or 14 (you usually O 5-9 days after your last pill..but be careful about using OPKs too soon - you need to wait until at least 3 days after your last Clomid pill or you can get a false positive). The first month I took 50mg on CD 3-7, and the second month (my BFP month), I took 50mg on CD 2-6 (because I was eager to start it, rather than my RE telling me to!). The RE told me it shouldn't make a difference when I started, but even though I got the BFP on the 2-6 month, I was worried because I only had one smaller follie, vs. two bigger ones the month I took it on CD 3-7. The one follie did end up maturing and got to 18mm when I O'd, but I didn't even feel any O pains on my BFP month, and the first month my ovary was killing me! It almost hurt to BD So I was actually shocked I got a BFP, b/c I was convinced my ovulation was weaker on the second month b/c I didn't feel anything.
Anyway, not sure what your dr. will recommend, but I would just start with taking it on CD 3-7 and then they can always change it around if they'd like. Also, the RE told me not to get too frustrated on my first cycle b/c they sometimes have to play around with the dosage to make you O. I ended up O'ing, but they may need to up your dose to 75mg or 100mg. In any case, I'm confident it will work for you, especially if you already seem to O on your own!
Oh, and one more thing (sorry to ramble). I would recommend taking 3 tbsp of Robitussin a day about 5 days before you O (make sure it's regular robitussin with the only active ingredient being guaifenesin). And I highly recommend buying pre-seed lubricant (the only one out there that doesn't harm sperm). I don't have nearly as much CM on Clomid (or it's just not noticeable), and the Robitussin really helped my CM become less sticky and more watery to eggwhite, and the pre-seed helped my DH enjoy BDing more! Sorry TMI The RE told me pre-seed doesn't really help sperm, but it certainly can't hurt. Good luck and please stay in touch! I'm eager to know how your cycles go...Hope you get your BFP!!!
Wow you have a lot of info thanks! I will for sure try the Robitussin and preseed once I get near ovulation... My dr also told me about the mid cycle scans and he wants me to get about 3. I will finish the pack of pills this Friday, so I guess AF will come sometime at the beginning of next week... Then of to the OB and hopefully Clomid!!!! What CD are you right now? When will your next medicated cycle begin? Hope we can start together! there's a thin cysters TTC buddy thread in the TTC forum, we can join them...
I only just ended my AF after miscarriage , so I have to wait until I get my next AF to start Clomid again (hopefully my cyst will be gone by then). I'm on CD 9 right now, and I have no idea what this cycle will be like since I just miscarried, but if it's like my usual ones, I should get my next AF by early to mid-June. If I don't get AF in the next 40-45 days, I'll probably ask them to prescribe Provera to bring on AF. Hopefully your first clomid cycle will give you a BFP (keep me posted on that!), but if not, we might be starting together on your second round. Thanks for the tip on the TTC thread - I'll definitely check it out and would love to join
I also am having a lot of trouble gaining weight and am ttc. Currently dh is deployed until Dec, but we were trying for 8 months before this, with no O or af in sight. Provera gave me af four cycles. I am 5ft and 90lbs. I went from 85 to 90lbs recently, but have trouble keeping it on if I'm not doing protene shakes and carnation with whole milk in the morning. My dr just wanted me to gain weight (before diagnosis of pcos) and didnt care how I did it. She told me to actually go to mcdonalds every night for fries and a milk shake! Well we did that for a while and I kept getting fatigued with all the fat in the diet and felt like crap all the time. Gaining weight didnt help me O, then I got the diagnosis of pcos, and stopped trying to gain weight. I will start clomid also when dh gets back. Hopefully I can O on it and not m/c.
Gosh, I'm thin but not that thin!.... now I feel fat. lol.
I am not on a lot of these other meds, because up until just recently I have not known much about what is going on. My doctor has not wanted to do anything beyond birth control for treatments and I have yet to find another doctor who will work with me.
I am currently on the nutrilite system (however that's spelt) and that is it.
My husband and I have been ttc on and off for the 2 1/2 years that we have been married... and nothing. Not one thing. Now that I'm on the nutrilite system I have noticed a few changes, one being my sex drive has increased, however I have not been on it long enough to see many other changes as of yet. I hear that a majority of women do become pregnant within a year of the treatment. So we will see...

Just to provide a tad bit of help/hope, I am also a thin sister - 5'4", and 107 pounds. I do NOT O on my own, although I used to (prior to age 21, I had very regular cycles). I did conceive 2 years ago on Clomid (2nd round), and now have a baby girl. We are trying again now, and going through the same thing as before. I know I should try to put on weight, but I honestly don't know how. I have terrible stomach problems, which is making it infinitely harder to stay at a normal weight...

Hi all! I am new to this. I was diagnosed with PCOS in January as I part of a fertility work up. My doc was surprised because i am normal weight (5'5, 125lbs) and all of my labs were normal. I was diagnosed per ultrasound. I never cycled on my own. I am on my fourth round but this one was the first with IUI. This cycle I took 100mg clomid, ovidrel and IUI. Tomorrow is day 7 post ovulation and I am having a progesterone level drawn. My question is how soon has anyone had symptoms of pregnancy post IUI. I do not want to get my hopes up b/c the let down is horrible. BUT... the last 3-4 days I have been really nauseated on and off throughout the day, breast tenderness, and heartburn. I am trying not to get my hopes up but the wait is killing me. Has anyone had similar problems.
When I was first started having trouble with PCOS I was a normal weight. Now, 10 years later, I am overweight and trying to get back down to a healthy weight so I can have a baby. Strange how PCOS works like that.
I actually lost weight when trying to get pregnant (I used Met) I"m 5'4.5" and have been 109, 107, 112, 115 for each of my pregnancies. Being thin didn't seem to hurt my chances. (oh and all my pregnancies have been successful.. knock on wood... I'm 23 weeks with #4)
I am so glad to have stumbled upon this thread. I was diagnosed a week ago with PCOS. I am 5'8" and weight 120 lbs. I have been drinking ensure weight gain. My gyno. didn't want to put me on met. because of my weight.
Right now I am on prometrium 200mg. at night for 10 nights to start AF and then Clomid on CD 3-7 50mg.
I hope I will ovulate and if so hopefully we will get a BFP. I got preseed as well!
