I've had weird blood sugar issues for as long as I can remember. I kept going to doctors who told me it was my imagination and nothing was wrong since I'm thin/normal (5'5", 130 lbs). Finally, about 6 months ago, I went to a reproductive endocrinologist who finally listened to me and decided to put me on Met. I've been on Met now since Feb 2009 and I've been feeling really balanced, no blood sugar highs or crashes and it's really helped regulate my energy level as well. Also, I used to have to eat every 2 hours and no matter what I ate, I was still hungry 2 hours later but the Met has really helped with that too and now I can eat like a normal person (3 meals and a couple snacks).

I'm currently on my second round of clomid at 100mg and I'm hopeful (especially since my first round at 50mg basically did nothing at all --no mood swings, no mature follies, nothing. I had to take progesterone to reset my system again).

Good luck to everyone!

great posts!! i've been on met for about year after being DX last summer...DR thought that PCOS was the obvious answer for my irregular cycles...had been on BCP for ages and finally was at a point to consider kids. started out on BCP and Met and decided to ditch the BCP (not getting any younger!!) and just see what happens. cycles started getting regular, skipping one month occasionally. no sign of O yet. my first Dr. relocated so i have a new one...i told him about he PCOS and he said i don't look like the typical PCOSer...not overweight, not hairy (although i tend to disagree with that!! i tend to hide it well), no acne. he agreed to keep me on the met and things have been ok...still no O though. soooo....all in all, yes, Met can work for thin cysters to regulate the cycle. hoping to inquire about clomid soon...feeling impatient.

it's funny, suddenly when you want a baby and things don't go according to plan how insane you become.
thanks ladies!!!

Hi there. There is hope. I have PCOS and my son just turned 1 on the 4th. I've always been thin, but I've also always had acne (cystic & scaring) and I have chin whiskers I first got pregnant after I'd stopped BC for 6 months, but it ended in a MC sometime between 6-8 weeks; 10 months later I was pregnant again. I was given progesterone while TTC but it didn't appear to be working. Took a BCT just before taking a low dose of Clomid and it came back neg. Immediately after taking one round of Clomid I took another BCT (I had a gazillion of them) and it came back positive. So I really didn't even need the Clomid. Luckily, there were no nasty side effects.

Lisa3, thanks for the reassurance on the IUI. It's nice to hear success stories from others with PCOS. I have about 3 books on PCOS that I have read, and all of them note the improved ability to conceive after losing weight. Unfortunately, that's not going to be an answer for us thin cysters! Good luck everyone!

I LOVE all these responses!!! Thank you all SO SO much for chiming in, there really is a larger group of thin cysters than I had originally thought!!!

On a side note, I've started taking Metformin! I went to my regular Dr. last week for allergies and casually mentioned the PCOS diagnosis/lack of periods and he said he gives all his PCOS patients Metformin. He said it would restore my period. He knows I get Hypoglycemic a lot, lethargic, etc.. I'm so hopeful, I just want to feel like a normal woman. I can't imagine I would have ever WISHED to get AF every month! lol...

Thank you ladies, for your responses. Anytime we are feeling down we should just go through this thread and know we're not alone!

One thing that I have noticed is that most women have mentioned being on BCPs before noticing problems. I have come across information indicating that synthetic progestin can cause insulin resistance. So I guess if you a genetically succeptable the BCPs or any other hormonal contraception will trigger the problem.

Will find some links when I have enough posts.

Just wanted to join this post - so good and so reassuring (am having a really low week...).

I'm 5'7", 120 lbs and had been on BC for almost 8 years when I stopped at Christmas 2008. I then didn't get a period - all my bloods came back totally normal (good) but my ovaries are covered in cysts (not good). The doctor put me on met in mid-May and I got a period 2 weeks later but since then nothing...

Am totally frustrated - so much advice just says to lose weight which I don't want/need to do and nothing seems to be working. Am trying a low carb diet and am meeting with a reflexologist next week but I just feel like such a fraud of a wife and not at all like a 'real' woman - the thing I'm meant to be able to do naturally I can't!
Keep telling myself it's only a matter of time, but that's not helping much.

Amber2 - would be really interested to hear what you've found out about BCP and insulin resistance.

Penguin- you sound just like me. I'm 5'7", 125 and my bloodwork was only ever so slightly out of the normal range, ovaries covered in cysts. I also stopped BCP at the end of '08 after having been on for about 10 yrs. My doc hasn't started me on Met yet, but she says that's the course. I started low-GI diet and DCI 2 weeks ago. I know that's not long, but so far nothing other than my skin is looking good and I'm not as tired anymore. I'm curious to know what your doc will do next or if sticking with the Met longer will change anything. Let's keep in touch

Penguin82: there is a reference to BCP's in the Insulin Resistance Diet book.

Yasmin8. I think I am like you. I have been reading stuff about pcos since I was diagnosed in 2002 but nothing seemed to fit me.

I am 32 years old. When I was younger and didn't know I has pcos I was 125lbs. 5'3" and athletic with frustrating abdominal fat but always had a regular period. I got some extra hair, cystic acne and other annoying androgen symptoms. My DHEA was very high. I was put on Yasmin and my life changed. I became slender without doing anything much different and for the past 5 years on yasmin I am around 110lbs, lost all the extra hair and feel feminine except for wreched mood swings. My only real complaint is teeny boobs.

Anyway i want to become pregnant and think becuase I have always got my period I may but I am afraid to go off yasmin. Doctors do not care to see me because they say I look good - but i know the symptoms are there.

What was your experience with pregnancy?
