This may be a silly question, but I am very thin with PCOS and am trying to conceive now for only a few months. I am wondering if anyone thin with PCOS has conceived with no medication or help (no clomid, metmorphin etc). Is it possible???- has anyone conceived on their own? Please give me some hope.

Hello there, my doctor did say that even with PCOS you can ovulate, however it could be just once a year

I am 24 and weigh 118, 5"3. DH and I have been TTC for 9 months, dx PCOS March. This cycle I am on 1000 of metaformin and 200 of clomid. (Last three cycles of 50, 100 and 150 clomid did not work). This is my first month on metaformin and I have my fingers crossed but I am trying to not get my hopes up AGAIN. After several mid cycle sonograms and tons of money spent on OPK I have yet to receive a positive and I am SO frustrated. I feel that clomid is not going to work for me after so many failed attempts and 200 seems like an awful lot! (I cry for unexplained reasons and poor DH has to ride my irrational rollercoaster when I am on the clomid). Has anyone else been prescribed this much clomid?? My doctor has said that if this month fails that he will finally send me to an RE. What is the next step? I know that I may sound like a baby but I am terrified of injections! (Although I will of course do whatever is necessary).
I am SO glad I found this website! I thought I was the only one who had PCOS and did not struggle with weight gain.

Jessl99 - Kat posted a great link to an article on PCOS treatment for non-obese women. There's an attached pdf handout that I thought really explained how medications worked. From reading that, it seems like metformin is really helpful in actually getting hormones back into balance which could help you to ovulate on your own without clomid. I would go to a RE and see what they recommend - I think obgyn's have only a limited knowledge on how treat us.
Good luck to you! My husband and I are trying to conceive as well, on the second month of metformin 1500mg. Hoping maybe this month I'll ovulate on my own!

Jessl99, you might not even need that high dose of Clomid if you started taking Metformin.

Here is my story: I am also a thin, 5'6" and 115 lbs. I have never had regular cycles, they are usually between 40-100 days long. In 2005 I started charting and realized I do not ovulate. After a year of TTC finally my gyn gave me a referal to an RE (my gyn did nothing to help me, no bloodworks, no Clomid, nothing ... ).
My RE DXed me with PCOS in 2006. After 3 long months on BCP and a laparoscopy, she put me on Clomid 50mg. It did not work, I did not ovulate. She prescibed Metformin that cycle. I went up to 1500mg very quickly, so when the next cycle started I was alredy on my full dose of Met. She also kept me on the same dose of Clomid: 50mg. And it worked! Met 1500mg and Clomid 50mg worked together and I ovulated! That cycle I did not get pregnant but on the second cycle I got my BFP and had a healthy baby 9 months later.
Fastforward to 2008 ...
We are TTC again but still no ovulation. At the end of October, 2008 I started taking Vitex and during the 6-7 months I was taking it I ovulated twice!!! Then again, our second month was the lucky one! I got pregnant! Unfortunately I lost the baby but maybe because I stopped taking Vitex. Bad decision!
And here comes another surprise: After my m/c I ovulated on my own! The first time since 2005!
This is my second cycle after my m/c and I am taking Soy 150mg. I hope it will work!

Hello everyone. I am new to this site and it's been great reading this thread. I stopped taking BCP after 10 years in January '09 and have not had any periods since. I was recently diagnosed with PCOS. I am 5'2 and 105 lbs. I am healthy and active, but have always been thin. My sister has also had trouble getting pregnant. She's tried Clomid for several months and is finally moving onto IVF. She has not been diagnosed with PCOS b/c her bloodwork was "normal". I was diagnosed due to high LH/Low FSH and after an ultrasound. My OBG tried prometrium for 7 days and no period, so I went to an RE, and after working with one for a couple of months decided to switch. My new RE recommended 10 days of Provera, and then another HSG (inconclusive results from first one) but he's pretty sure all is well there. He then mentioned trying Clomid and Met, but do you stay on Met while pregnant? I wonder what the risks are? Does anyone know about this?

Thank you for all of your posts!

I am on Met, also PCOS, thin 5'4" 115. MY Obgyn put my on Met after testing and U/S to determine PCOS. It did not bring my period but I did show a much clearer U/S after taking for 6 months, and it also can greatly reduce m/c rate from all I have read. The decision to stay on it during pregnancy seems to vary from doctor to doctor, but many do keep you on it for a portion or more of your pregnancy. I haven't got that far to start question about that part yet. Smart move going forward to the RE. When I started with the RE they had me bring on my period with Provera and then a full month of bcp and monitored throughout that cycle. They decided not to even try Clomid for me and we went straight to injectables. My experience with the injectables was positive. Very few side effects and easy to use. I had a wacky cycle and my body reacted completely abnormally, but the actual drugs were easy to take and no side effects. I have heard that Clomid can have a lot so make sure you ask lots of questions of your RE. Clomid is much cheaper than the injectables, but if insurance covers it you may want to ask some questions. BTW I took Gonal-f and HCG.

Hopeful420 - When I got pregnant with my daughter I was on Met + Clomid. My RE suggested to take the full dose (1500mg) until 6 weeks, then I went down to 1000mg for 5 days, then 500mg for another 5 days. So I completely stopped taking it at 7.5 weeks. I had no problems during this pregnancy and my baby was healthy.

Thank you ErikaG_78 and NikiAngel - very helpful! I guess I am not at the point where I need to worry about taking Met while pregnant yet - first I have to get on a regular cycle! But I guess I'm trying to stay positive that it WILL happen one of these days

Good luck and keep us posted how it goes. I am doing the 1500...took me a little while to get used to it, but then it's like nothing. We'll see what happens for me when and if I get pg.

Erika, GL, can I ask about the Soy what is that/supposed to do? Is it a more natural approach to fertility?

NikiAngel - Soy works like Clomid does but usually it has less side effects.

Quote:
"Soy Isoflavones" is a natural plant derived phytoestrogen (phyto means plant), which is an anti-estrogen, just like Clomid. Both are known as SERMs (Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators). It works by fooling your brain into thinking its estrogen levels are low. This causes your body to reslease more FSH & LH which helps stimulate follicle production (same as Clomid). You take Soy Isoflavones, like Clomid, on CD 1-5 or 2-6, or 3-7 or 5-9. It is not thought to cause infertility if it is only taken for 5 days a month. There is not much published information available on it regarding TTC, because it is "natural", not patented by the pharmaceutical companies, and not FDA approved. Most doctors will also not recommend it for this reason.

ErikaG - what type of side effects did you have with Clomid? That's the next step for me and wondering what to expect - I've heard not such good things. Has anyone ever tried Femara (I think it is a Clomid alternative)?

ErikaG thank you for your support and comments. I always love to hear success stories and I wish you the best of luck this time around!

GeorgiaRN: the side effects for clomid for me were mostly just emotional. I cried easily and I will admit was slightly irrational. Other than that though I haven't experienced too many physical side effects. They do say however that the clomid can make your CM more "hostile" and my doctor recommended taking Robutussin once a day every day starting on the last day of clomid to help.

I am currently taking provera to induce my next period so we can get going again and I am feeling a little anxious and impatient. If you have ever taken provera how long did it take for AF to show up?
