Question Thin and Met?

I was wondering how many of you are on Met. I asked my doc about it, but he seemed to think it wasn't the route for me since I'm a thin cyster and probably not IR. I've already done two rounds of Clomid - neither of which produce an "o". I'll be starting the next round and wonder if the met would help.
I've also read about the possibilty of soy??? My doc said this is a fad for now, but as long as it's only for a small amount of time it really can't hurt!
Oh, I'm 125 lbs and 5'5".

Thanks

Met is good if you are trying to get pregnant. Here's my experience with docs and met:

I am thin and was put on met by a doctor who got the advice on how to treat me through an endocrinologist who was too backed up on patients to see me. The endocrinologist sent me a letter about pcos and the importance of losing weight so it makes me wonder if he assumed I am heavy because of the blood test results. I am not insulin resistant either. Everytime I go to another doctor they look surprised and tell me I do not look like I have pcos because I'm skinny with no acne. When I finally went to my gynie for another opinion he went through my results with me and said that I definately have pcos and that met is a great choise along with diane. However, when I went back to him to complain of vomiting and losing hair everyday he told me and his student doctor this:

"Here's what I do not understand, you are not insulin resistant, slim body, and not trying to get pregnant. If you were trying to get pregnant that would be another story. Stay on the dianne and give the met a break. I just don't understand why you got the prescription in the forst place."

Soya is a great dairy substitute and a sourse of protein so something good to incorporate into your diet.

Hi
I am thin and definetly not IR and have been prescribed Met with Clomid. My doctor told me that it has been proven to benifit woman with PCOS even if they are not IR. It made me feel mildly nauseous for a couple of weeks but now I feel fine. Too early to tell if it is benefiting me TTC but I will keep you posted. O'd late..day 20 and am 3DPO but don't think I Bd'ed at the right time. Don't know much about Soy..what's the theory??
I am 5'7" and 120lbs

Benifits of soy: (excerts from http://www.busywomensfitness.com/soy.html)

Soy is about 35-38 percent protein and contains a full complement of essential amino acids. It also is an excellent source of fiber, antioxidant vitamins, and minerals such as calcium, iron and zinc. And it provides omega-3 fatty acids and contains isoflavones, also known as phytoestrogens (plant compounds that mimic the hormone estrogen).

several studies indicated that Asian women -- who typically eat a high-soy diet -- have a much lower incidence of reproductive and hormone-related disorders, as well as a lower incidence of heart disease, than their Western counterparts.

eating a diet that includes "25 grams of soy protein per day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease."

The isoflavones in it help alleviate symptoms associated with menopause, such as hot flashes, insomnia, headaches, mood swings and night sweats. As such, it is an effective alternative to hormone replacement therapy. (Studies have shown that hormone replacement therapy may increase risk of breast and endometrial cancer.)

Soy also appears to reduce risk of osteoporosis because its isoflavones help slow bone loss and may even stimulate bone formation.

I'm TTC and on met. Well, actually Glucophage XR. No major s/e's except when I went up to 1500 mgs. Then I felt rather ill and was ovulating anyway on 1000mgs, so I just stayed there. I'm not IR, but then again, the tests we have to measure insulin resistance are just not sensitive enough to pick it up.

I'm 5'5 and 114 pounds.

Question benifits of met on non-insulin resistant women?

Is repeat glucose testing enough to indicate insulin resistance? Can you be thin and IR? I am so confused. I am 5'4 and 110 lbs and tested normal for fasting glucose which has been repeated. Athough my blood sugar comes up normal on my brother's (type 1 diabetic) glucometer, I notice sleepiness after I eat and I crash if I don't get food in me every couple hours. Could that in itself be a sign?

SianCat--

I had that same "crashing" feeling after eating, and I also come up normal for glucose. I think it's indicative of insulin issues, and that tests we have to measure it just aren't sensitive enough. Frustrating, right?

I am 5'5 and 125 lbs. After my OB/GYN gave me Chlomid four times (all unsuccessful), he passed me onto an RE. The RE immediately dx'ed PCOS through an u/s, and confirmed my IR through glucose blood tests. I am proof that thin cysters can have IR. My OB/GYN never thought I had PCOS because I am not overweight.

After just one month of Metformin, I got pregnant. What is very interesting about my situation is that I ovulated without ever having my period, and luckily I conceived on the very first ovulation after Met.

Hi Sian Cat,

I've done lots of reading and found many women who are thin and IR. They haven't found out why these women with IR stay thin but they do. I believe in the heridary connection. If your brother has issues with insulin/sugar then you probably do too. My dad is type II diabetic and I have all the symptoms you talk about in regards to sugar and food. I'm thin too by the way. I had an oral glucose tolerance test a little while ago and it came back normal. my RE is going to get it done again though as to do it properly would be to check glucose and INSULIN 1 and 2 hours after consuming the sugary drink.

I'm pretty sure there is IR in there somewhere. I have had to really fight to get someone who understood that connection though.

I'm 5' 6.5" and 130lbs. I'd been taking met for about two years when I stopped in September...it was unrelated, but I was just having digestive problems and as well all know, Met does NOT help in the digestion area! So I stopped because of that to wait until I got better... but I haven't started it up again. I have an app't with a new PCOS doctor this wednesday, and I'm going to talk to her about whether met is necessary... I'm thin and definitely not TTC at this point.

I'm average size (5'5'', 135lbs) and IR. My sugar levels are normal but my insulin levels are high. They have to test your insulin levels, not just sugar.

My doc said she was surprised I was so trim. I'm on met now.

(My doc said to avoid soy as it inhibits fertility. Don't know about that, but thought I'd mention it.)

I'm 6 ft tall and 155 lbs. I was 185 over a year ago (october 2005 I started to eat better and lost 30 lbs in 3 months ... I was at the top of my weight chart and lost weight because Dr advised to get close to the bottom of my weight chart to see if that would help PCOS). I started Met in Nov 2005 and had, for the 1st time in my LIFE, regular periods. I don't have most of the symptoms of PCOS. I'm not IR either. I would beg your Dr to at least let you try it and see if it works. Give it at least 3 or 4 months to see if it works. It worked for me right away.

HTH!

Default Can you ovulate with getting a period?

RosieSBE -

I am a thin cyster and was diagnosed with PCOS in '06. It took me at least 2 years to be diagnosed. I guess I flew under the radar because I wasn't overweight. Oh, yeah and I am IR.

I have been on Met. 1500 mg for 6 months and haven't gotten AF. Can you really ovulate without getting a period? The reason I ask is because I really feel like I ovulate the beginning of every month. Even my lab results are indicative that I am ovulating. My ob gyn says it is weird that I am not getting AF.

I'm a thin cyster and am not IR. When I started TTC in '04 and couldn't get pregnant, my gyno at the time said that I had probably never ovulated (I don't know how he would know that, but whatever). The endo I saw (Dr. Glueck in Cincinnati) prescribed 2250 mg of glucophage XR and I was pregnant within a few months.

Good luck!
