I am happy to see this on here as well. I stopped taking yasmin in July and was diagnosed with PCOS in September. I felt great after stopping for a couple weeks but started feeling terrible when I should have gotten AF. It did not come for 50 days and dr put me on Provera, but sent me for blood work and ultrasounds as well. This i swhen I was diagnosed. The provera worked and I feel better, but I am not sure if PCOS explains some other things. I am 5'2" and weigh 119, 31 years old and happily married. I have never been over weight, but if i do gain a few lbs its in my belly. I am pretty curvy though as well. Before going on BCP, I had a pretty regular cycle, but very short AF. I do not have acne or facial hair. But, I did have an ectopic pregnancy about 8 years ago and significant (unexplained) pelvic pain ever since. I wonder if that or the headaches I get a lot of are related to PCOS. I do think Yasmin definitley messed me up a lot! I have been looking for a post like yours.. i do not think you are alone!

All different people, all with PCOS, ALL different symptoms and experiences. Huh. Sometimes I'm happy to have been diagnosed, but then theres days where I feel it has only blanketed all our symptoms...just an afterthought..hubby and I keep pushing along & being hopeful...

I've always been totally regular (24-28 d) and know that I was fertile up to age 21. Then I went on oral contraceptive pills (OCP), did an egg donation which ended badly (nearly died, thanks to greedy egg harvesting industry), came off OCP, and voila... messed up cycles...

I don't think there is enough research to prove that a subset of the population cannot be negatively affected by having exogenous hormones suppressing normal hormone production for years. I have had pelvic ultrasounds demonstrating completely normal ovaries before I started all the hormones. I don't accept that it is a coincidence that my ovaries are all polycystic and messed up now. No amount of "evidence based research" or doctorly anecdotes about people getting pregnant right after they come off the pill can convince me that my PCOS is unrelated to exogenous hormones.

Bottom line - nobody knows, and nobody will probably do any research on it because it is bad for the industry. I hope and pray that somebody will be intrigued enough to see what the age-matched, dose-related incidence of PCOS is after years of hormone exposure vs. no hormone exposure.

I always had long cycles (like 35-45 days). Condom broke once and got pregnant at 19, m/c soon after. Got Hormonal BC after that, stopped for about a year and everything went back to normal. Went back on it before I married him and was on it for 5 years...then went off of it in January. I got 2 normal periods and then nothing for 6 months. Dr gave me Provera and it kick started me. They did a pelvic ultrasound and found 8 cysts...not enough for a PCOS diagnosis but I am being treated for PCOS anyway. I have had some acne and obviously anovulation, but that's it. I started Metformin yesterday and have already learned carbs are the devil so we will see. I will never take the pill again.

Before I went on BCPs (LoEstrin) my cycles were 30 days apart on the dot, I was 15 when I started.

I came off BCPs this past December and now my cycles are nonexistent! It's almost like because I took BCPs, I gave myself PCOS... I had my first cyst burst at 16 y/o, while on BCPs. I honestly think that the BCPs sped up my process of getting PCOS. My mother's flared up when she was over 30 and I got mine before 20... so, I'm not sure.

I agree. I had no apparent signs of a fertility problem up until I went on BCP's (normal 28 day cycles like clockwork). I took them for about 10 years total. Went off it once somewhere in the middle with no period for a year so doctor put me back on them stating that that was my normal cycle (which was not true). Then the second time I went off in preparation to start TTC, had one normal period and then things got crazy and stopped all together. And that is when I got my diagnosis. I really think the pill had something to do with it. No one in my family has a fertility issue.

I am glad I found this thread. I haven't officially be diagonosed with PCOS, but have been having fertility problems. I stopped bc Sept 08 and have only ovulated once on my own (resulted in m/c) been on clomid all summer, ovulated but no pg. Just now started seeing RE. Had hsg yesterday and it appears as if I have pcos. RE is concernd about insulin resistance because i have a family history of diabetes on both sides of my family. This kind of shocked me because I am 5'2" and 110 lbs. I always thought people with pcos were overweight. When my bloodwork comes back i bet he says I have pcos.

I think birth control contributed to this. I had my first period at 12 and while I can't say they were regular but they weren't that irregular I can say that I had periods and I can't say I remember going to long between them. maybe 2 months at the most. (i wasn't completly paying attention because I didn't care) I didnt really have acne problems other than what normal teenagers have. I started bc at 19 and stopped at 24. The last year on bc I was having problems with break through bleeding. Now that I have stopped I don't have periods on my own (need provera and/or clomid) and I have mid cycle bleeding. I also have acne, which is embarrassing when you are 25!

With that being said No one in my family has had problems getting pregnant except me. My mom has female issues but I don't think it is PCOS, and she always says her problems started with birth control. I think she has endo, because she has really painful heavy periods (she is also going through the change). But she has regular periods.

Sorry this was so long but I agree with you guys that I think there are other causes than genes.

I'm so glad somebody finally started thin cyster's issues...
I've alway been thin but even though my bmi is slightly low for my height,I get fat around my belly.no matter what I do I still have my tiny double belly.
I was regular(32-37) for most of the times since puberty at age 13,there were some times that my period went off but provera shot was enough to bring it back for another couple of years.I think whenever I stress out my periods get messed up.
for years my main symptom was acne,no hormonal problems,no cyst,no IR or missed periods.until last Jan tht my family dr told me to try bcp for acne and 3 months of hell started .since stopping bcp not mentioning all the side effects I had 3 normal periods and then nothing.
I truely believe bcp was the devil .I'm doing everything to help but no matter what I do I still dont get my period no O and besides hair loss that I never had it.

I understand your frustration.

My paternal grandmother had 14 kids & my maternal grandmother had 12.

My dad has 7 kids - 4 with my mom & 3 elsewhere. My mom had 4 full term births & 4 miscarriages.

My brother has 3 girls, my older sister has 3 kids & my younger sister has 1 & is expecting her 2nd.

My younger sister was diagnosed with PCOS. She fits the "typical" PCOS profile. She had trouble conceiving her first. She lost 50 lbs and she was pleasantly surprised soon after.

I don't see where its in my genetics? lol!

i say just cause you dont have trouble getting preg dont mean anything. miscarriages are a sign of pcos too. my great grandma didnt have problems with having children but its in the genes on her side too

I have never had a normal period. I am very thin (5'9", 125) with a very small waist and bigger hips. I have been on birth control from 15 to about 29. I have been trying to get pregnant for almost a year, with three cycles of clomid doing nothing. From the last cycle I had the worst period of my entire life, I was on the toilet gushing blood for three days. My doctor wants me to try Metformin but I am scared of the side effects and the fact that it could take months to work. I feel dejected and frustrated that every doctor I see has a different opinion of what I should do.

Luv2run - My story sounds exactly like yours. The frustrating part is that no doctors seem to know anything about thin pcos and even when I push they tell me they treat it the same, which I do not agree with.

I've done Clomid and Femara with no luck and it's starting to tick me off because I'm sure the answer is in the thin pcos.

I am ttc#2. Was lucky enough to conceive DS shortly after quitting Diane 35 back in July 06. I spontaneously o'd on CD33. Have been trying for #2 since July. Latest ultrasound showed cysts are back so I am back on Diane 35 until my RE appointment next month. I want to try Met. Has anyone been successful and if so, how long does it take?
