Also, do not let people scare you with horrible birth stories! I was terrified of certain things because of stories I had heard. I went on to have a very eventful birth ending in an emergency c-section. As bad as I am told my birth was, it was no where near as bad as other people made it out to be. I would still do it again in the blink of an eye!
Take tons of pictures, I swear my son has changed numerous times in these first 2 weeks.
Enjoy the help of others, but also be able to realize when the help is no longer needed. There may come a time when you just want your house and life back and feel the need to make up your own routine.
And like Shorty said, embrace the help of your husband or partner. At first I was worried he wouldn't change the diaper right, or burp the baby correctly...etc, etc, etc. You get over that fast. The help from daddy is great and it allows them to bond with the baby and see how hard mommas job really is.

* Invest in a rocking chair or one of those glider chairs. May save you some pacing, I wish I had one sooner... we're finally getting one now after 3 months of pacing!
* Mommy meltdowns are ok every now and then. Not the I'm going to hurt myself or the baby meltdown, but the occassional crying out of sleep deprevation, frustration or being overwhelmed is ok.
* Have some IBprofen and a heating pad on hand... your back is gonna hurt!
* Take it ONE DAY AT A TIME!

* the sex part was ok (after 6 weeks) it was after it that I hurt. There was so much pressure after. I don't know if it was the uterus contracting or what but to stand up straight hurt like heck.

Points: 163,326.57 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 163,326.57 | Here's something else I've been thinking about. My L&D went awfully. Murphy's Law was in full effect. And I have some terrible feelings left over from that. I get really hurt if someone calls my story a horror story, because it was real, and it did happen...a horror story is something made up to scare people. Mine is my real story, and it did happen.
I want people to remember this if they have a tough birth and bad feelings afterward: not loving your birth has nothing to do with your love for your child. I love my daughter more than life itself, although her birth was awful. For some reason, the standard response when someone has problems or an unwanted c-section is, "Well, as long as Mom and baby are healthy, that's all that matters." I had a nurse say that to me in the recovery room, for Pete's sake! Well, Mom and baby aren't always healthy following a traumatic birth, and no, I really don't believe that's all that matters. While your baby is what is ultimately most important, you don't have to love the fact that something bad happened to you. It has nothing to do with your worth as a mother.
I hope you all get good, safe birth experiences. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. |

This weekend we saw a movie where the mom had to have a rushed c-section because the baby was in distress, and he got very emotional. He was so calm during the whole thing (almost nine months ago), I never would have known he was so scared! |

What to pack in the hospital bag for the big day!!
| I'd like to add a suggestion - tape a list to your hospital bag of things you have to add in at the last minute (contact solution, glasses, etc.) Because I went to the hospital for a non-stress test/ultrasound and was admitted for induction, I wasn't eve allowed to go home to get my bag! I had to make a list for DH and in my hurry, left a few things off.

ammaarah,
i could not agree with what you said more. i had lunch with a friend who had a baby two years ago and she was sharing some things with me that she said noone ever told her. we were talking about how people often skip over any part of childbirth that is not rosy and delightful and only tell us the good parts. but it's the less than wonderful things that we really need to hear from other women.
anyway, what she told me was to expect to see lots of bleeding in the hours after delivery and to also expect to see some pretty big clots. |
