Myself and fiance are thinking of adopting a Down's Syndrome baby and wanted to know all about it eg. How to go about it (we live in UK), what exactly happens with adoption, and any general advice on having a Down's child in the family
Any help much appreciated

Bravo to you for considering adopting a baby with special needs! It takes a special person with a very big heart I think! I don't know about the process of adopting from outside of the US but here's a link to an agency that I've heard a lot about that works with placing special needs children and infants. http://www.untilallhavehomes.com I hope this is helpful.
Let us know what you find out.

My 7 y/o niece is a "special needs" child (with many similarities to Down's). She is the best thing in my life. Although I have a 16 month old nephew who I adore and another on the way, my April will always have my heart and soul.
Aside from her mental challenges, she is also unable to walk (or eat for that matter). The first two years of her life my sis dropped everything and focused solely on April because she was not expected to live long. (This was not a healthy thing for sis). April has now surpassed her life expectency by 2 years (you show em April). She attends school and church and all the activities her parents can get her involved in. They treat her very much like a "normal" child, which only by the grace of God they have been able to do (how do you do that when you are told your child will likely not live till 5!).
Anyway, she sings and talks in a combination of sign and April-ese, wheels her own chair (and is a maniac!), she is an absolute joy to everyone (except her brother!). (You can see her in the link in my sig).
I think, if you and your partner are up for the challenge, you will be truly blessed by welcoming a special child into your family. My family's life has been changed in wild and wonderful ways we could have never imagined and would have never experienced with a "normal" child.
All the best!

I have a brother with Downs and a cousin wiht Downs. My brother is very active. He is 21 years old. He will graduate high school in May (with a special diploma not a regular one). He did have a stroke about 2 years ago so now his speech is worse than it was before but it is ok. However my cousin is 25, he can barely function. He got potty trained at age 13 or so. He has no speech. Downs can vary between child to child. They are very loving children.

Congrats on your decision to adopt...not sure about Downs but my DS's developmental specialist adopted a Downs child just about a year ago now and he is doing remarkable after being deemed "unadoptable" ...
Its a great challenge as is parenting any child...go with your heart

Best of luck to you. It takes a huge heart and a lot of love to take in a special needs child and I have a lot of respect for you for thinking about this.

Thanks for the responses everyone. We're still researching Down's Syndrome and looking at the adoption process but have decided to definately do it, so we will wait til we're fully informed and then apply
