Default thinking of decreasing Met dose...

Hi everyone,

I just got some bloodwork from yesterday... and my estrogen has dropped out... at 48 for what should be the luteal phase (= my lowest ever in a test). The GP thinks Met isn't working - she wants me back at the specialist ASAP. I have an appointment, but it's not until early Oct. It's been 44 days since my last AF, and I normally never get a cycle this long (previous longest is 40 days and I only had two of them).

I had my best cycle ever on 750mg of Met, and am thinking of going back to that dose, until I can see my specialist in October.

What do others think of this? I know you are not docs and you can't okay a dose, but I am curious to know if others have experienced things getting worse on Met... I just think maybe 750mg is the dose for me??

Love,
Michelle

I would say that you should try and reduce your dose. If that is the best that you have even done then I dont thing it would hurt. Everyone does different of meds and maybe you just need to take a low dose until that dont work anymore. I was on 1000mg and that was good for me for a few months and no I have had to up my dose cause my cycles are out of wack again.

Thanks Heady.

I think I will try the 750mg until I am able to see the specialist in Oct. I think I will also make an appointment to see a dietitian who specialises in PCOS, just to make sure my diet is the best it can be for PCOS. I figure if I can manage PCOS on mostly diet and exercise with a little help from the meds, than that is better than more meds and a worse diet.

I am beginning to think that my weight has something to do with it (am thin cyster), although the doc didn't think I was too thin to ovulate. I remember being this thin in the past and getting longer cycles than when I was a few kilos heavier. I am wondering if the combination of diet, exercise and too much Met is making my body think I am starving it?? So I am going to aim to increase weight by a couple of kilos, but keep exercising and eating well - maybe just the reduction in Met will mean a couple of kilos go back on me.

Thanks again for listening and taking the time to reply. I really felt that I needed to think and write this out, since it is a bit of a shock to have back bad results after trying so hard to improve them.

Love,
Michelle

Update....

Appears that doc was wrong on the not being too thin to ovulate issue.

Dietician says I am too thin to ovulate regularly - she wants an extra 7 kgs or so on me for me to be the ideal weight for ovulation / conception.

I have reduced to 750 mg Met... and we'll see how that goes.

Love,
Michelle

wow - too thin to ovulate. Maybe your dosage on met is fine but you just need to gain a wee bit of weight to be in perfect condition for ovulation. Perhaps take it easy on the exercising too - I've read that too much exercising can delay ovulation.

Thanks Nat. I've been told by a number of health care professionals that the exercise I do is not excessive and shouldn't interfere with regular ovulation - they classify it as "moderate" - so I am not going to cut it down. I think I O'ed on 750mg of Met in May with the same amount of exercise and eating well to control insulin - obviously was a little heavier back then, so I am confident all I need is a little more weight for stuff to work like it's supposed to!!

Love,
Michelle

Oh good, I was just concerned since I know oddly enough (and lazily enough) AFTER I stopped exercising so vigilantly (I was doing 1 hour a day elliptical trainer plus weight training) I not only LOST weight but I also ovulated. So.... weird. I finally feel well enough and adjusted to this damn met that I can start exercising again - after 2 months of NOT exercising. It's insane.... and I am normal weight, but not remotely underweight.
