I am thinking about making an appointment with my PCP to talk about depression. Should I anticipate a long conversation about details or a brief period of listening and a prescription for some meds? Honestly, I'd prefer the latter and move on with life, but I just want to be prepared. I really don't want a referral to a psychiatrist/psycologist.

Are you looking to go to talk about the 'possibility' that symptoms you have may be depression, or are you going for already diagnosed depression?
If you've never been diagnosed, your doctor will probably ask you several questions about what symptoms you're having, when they happen, and make sure they aren't related to something else.
For now, just be prepared to be as specific as you can about your current feelings/symptoms...and when they occured.
(Turns out my depression was directly related to a new Rx for Demulen that I was given for my pcos. I came off the demulen, and the depression lifted almost immediately)

My advice to you, is to talk to your PCP about depression, get some information if you have never been diagnosed. Even though a lot of people look down on therapy, I will tell you it works wonders vs. medications. Medications aren't always the key, you can go through tons of different types before you find the right one if you even do.
I have bipolar depression, and I have been on at least 10 different medications none of which have worked....but NO medication will ever substitute for my hour a week that I just get to sit down and talk! I love my time with my therapist....you might have to go through a few before you find the perfect one, and I finally did, after 3..and it kills me to have to leave her when I move in 3 months. I can't tell you how much therapy helps people....don't just assume you need meds, it might just be an underlying cause that you just need to talk about...people really underestimate the power of talking!!

I think it depends on the relationship you have with your doctor. My doctor knows what I am normally like and my family history of depression. So when I sat down in her office and burst into tears, it was pretty quick.
You might feel more like talking once you've been on pills for a while. They just upped my ability to deal with my emotions and they upped my energy level too, once I found the right pill.
I guess it's different for everyone. It shouldn't be tooo different from a normal appointment.

I think this is what I'm looking for. I am going to call today when they're open and get it for a possible sinus infection (again!) and talk about depression. I have not been diagnosed, but I am quite certain that's what's going on and I have quite the family history. Thanks!!
