The options that were laid out for me were a D&C short term remedy but able to have more children, Progesterone induced bleed..clear out everything still able to have more children or the third option of a Endometrial Ablation longer term no more children. Are you taking Metformin? That has helped some women to get their blood chemistry back on track and thus helping with the long bleeds.
Speak frankly with your doctor so that you can make the right decision for you.

For long bleeds, (3 weeks or more) you should get your doctor to do an ultrasound to check for hyperplasia. I had an AF for over 3 months before a doctor figured that out. I was in stage 2 / stage 3 is considered precancerous. I had a D&C 3 years ago to fix that and since then I haven't had more than 2/3 weeks of spotting instead of a normal AF once or twice a year, the rest are somewhat normal. I'm now on Nuvaring, since pills made me nauseous all the time (and would just stop working at about the 6 month mark). 15 months of Nuvaring and if I only leave it out for 4 days I get a 7 day period... every third month is heavy with painful cramps. Its not perfect... but I guess i can live with it for 4 more years until a doctor decides I'm "old enough" to want a hysterectomy.
Hi. I tried to open your link to Pelvic Congestion, but I was unable - I have chronic pain even after surgery to separate my colon and ovary and remove adhesions. I will look into this further.
i have had my pcos under control for a few years and a month before i am supposed to go for a chkup with a new ob/gyn i start a period that hasnt stoped yet its ben2 weeks today and getting wrse i thought the metformin was doing it so i stopped ive been taking the same meds for a year or so & been regular and ovulating and was gonna try to get preggo next month after my chkup havet been in about 4or 5 years my other gyn just left with not giving out records so i got to start allover. this kindasucks it asnt done this mess in years! nyone got any tips i made an appt monday with my fnp prover makes itworse ive don that b4 i don have ins either!
sorryme keybard is sticking or something i know how to spell
I had my period from Nov 08 to the beg. of March 09. My gyn has put me on birth control and it stopped within 4 days of startin the birth control. I know ot doesnt help with trying to get pregnant but it stopped the bleeding.
it hasnt happened since 2004 the last time it did my dr gave me provera and it made it worse and it didn't stop when i took the whole rx the dr finally gave me somethin to make me stop it wasnt bcps but it was hormone pills i just dont remember what it was
the last time it did this it lasted 6 months and i cant go thru that again
For those of you who haven't realized this yet.... Provera is prescribed to make you bleed. In a perfect world it regulates your period without being on bc / having to take a pill everyday. So if you are having bleeding a lot more than you should I would advise you ask your doctor for an alternative. I had an ..... I won't describe this doctor... who prescribed me this when I had hyperplasia (she had the ultrasound and knew this). Then she want on vacation. While she was gone I had to have an emergency d&c to stop the bleeding. If I knew then what I know now I probably would have tried to sue her. I missed 5 days of work and thanksgiving that year because of that prescription.
My good doctor who was layed off last fall.... she prescribed me megesteron (spell?) to stop long bleeds. I usually only took it for 1 or 2 weeks. Then my next p - start a new kind of bc. This worked pretty well until I got up to a 40(mg?) dose which made the lining in my uterus so thin I spotted constantly. That took being off any hormones for 2 months to fix....
I'm happy to say I've been on Nuvaring for 16 months now, with only 2 p's that were 2 weeks of spotting instead of being normal. I won't kid you that it isn't inconvenient at times or just plain annoying.... but it's worth it in my opinion. No nausea everyday like with the pill... and no working for 3 months and then stopping like all the other types of pills I've been on over the past 4 years. I wish you the best of luck with your next dr. apt and hope you get something that works! I've had to suffer with the horribleness for 3 months at a time so I don't know how you made it 6 months without half killing your doctor at the time....
yeah i had an appt today with my FNP and i told her i needed somethin to stop the bleedn & of course the first thing she tried to give me was ....TADA... PROVERA! im like i want to STOP bleedn not bleed to death! i understand the whole theory of cleaning out if ur not having enuf af's on a reg basis but i have been very regualr and predictable for the last 2 yrs. they say losn weight helps but with me it triggrs these long bleeds. she says its losing estrogen when you lose some of the fat cause it holds hormones blah blah i figgerd that much. I said WELL GIVE ME SOME OF THAT! she thinks it might b my thyroid so i got to wait 4 panel results.
btw when i went for 6 months it wasnt real bad all the time, most of the time it was kinda like the last 2 days of ur af when it's not real bright and its trying to stop. sorry so long!

I have been bleeding for 6 months heavy but not very heavy. Diagnosed last month and doctor prescribed me a BC pack...So I began those 3 weeks ago, during my off week, I am on my period....bleeding is very bad, Sunday morning wake up in a pool of my blood, and I had been up and down all night changing my pads because my pads would be soaked every hour on the hour. Cramps in my lower abdomen, yes, and I am so scared so confused, and I am going to my doctor tonight to figure out what is occurring within my body! :-(
wow! Did this make me pause!
I just found this board today, surfing around and trying to find out what's wrong with me sind my doc doesnt seem to care.
I've been a heavy bleeder since my 3rd child was born ( I've had 3 c sections.. sometimes wonder if that messed me up?) and it's getting worse by the month.
The last 3 months were horrible. This month was so bad that when I told my mom about the size of the clots she thought I was having a misscarriage instead of a period. One things for sure.. I was not pregnant. So I've been telling my doctor repeatedly about the clots, feeling weak and woozy, severe cramping and that I'm afraid to leave the house during my period because even with doubling up ( super tampons and pads) there's accidents from changing activities.... like sitting down to drive and then getting out of the car! Well he did a pelvic, then an ultrasound, told me I'm fine and put me on birthcontrol but other than gaining 30 lbs in 8 months, there was no result. Last appt. he said he thought I was exagerating about the " handsized clots"! What am I to do? Short of being gross and saving the evidence in a zippy bag? My husband is ready take me to the ER next period, he is scared b/c my mom had uterine cancer, but the doc says I'm fine... whatever that means, right?
It doesnt help that we're overseas and the military docs here are totally understaffed and overworked. Any thoughts?
SusiQ is a little panicked.
SusiQ....be gross! Save the clots in a freezer and take them in to him and shove it under his nose. I had a doctor like that who kept telling me that I was exaggerating how bad I was bleeding and how big the clots were. For two years I bled like that...almost continuously. He'd do blood tests and find that while I had low iron, I wasn't anemic, so obviously he figured I was lying about how heavily I was bleeding (leaving aside the multivitamins, iron pills, and incredible amount of iron rich food that I craved, and ate, constantly). It took a new doctor, and a threat of violence on my part, before anything was ever done about it. They found that I had advanced stage 3 uterine hyperplasia. The specialist figured I was only a month or so away from uterine cancer if it hadn't been caught.
Don't let any doctor EVER belittle your concerns. If you have to take the evidence in and shove it under their nose, then do it. Even overseas, they can still send you to a local specialist. I was a military wife for 9 years, so I know how dismissive the military doctors can be. Their motto seems to be "If they can still walk, they're alright".
It's better to gross...and wrong...than do nothing and find out too late that your concerns were right. And ultimately, if it's not hyperplasia, and you're not at risk for uterine cancer, then the peace of mind that will come with knowing that FOR CERTAIN is more than worth the slight embarassment associated with being gross.
After a horrible long on going battle and a full 2 months of missed work due to ongoing PAIN, my GYN wants to go in do more surgery. For any who doesn't know, (which is probably all) I was diagnosed with PCOS after my last surgery( a diagnostic laparoscopy) on 3/6/09. My doctor found that I have PCOS in one ovary and the opposite ovary's fallopian tube is blocked. She wants to go in and remove half of the Polycystic Ovary but when I asked about possibly removing the blockage on the other tube she said that she didn't do that kind of surgery and she could refer me to someone that did, but insurance probably won't cover it because its cosmetic!!? I didn't know what to say, how is helping to ensure I'll be able to conceive after I get married cosmetic?! Any advice would be helpful because my doctor has scheduled surgery for tuesday. I feel like this is the only option I have. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP...
shes smoking crack, how the hell is a blocked fallopian tube cosmetic? you say you want to ensure you can concieve after marriage, so im assuming you don't have kids already. that should be a major problem to a dr espc a gyn. (cause in my experience if it has to do with having kids, docs will get serious real quick like and in a hurry).
first i would call the ins company and talk to someone and ask what is covered.drs don't know crap about ins, if you call ask them what kind of gyn surgery is covered and what is considered elective. if the dr claims it is cosmetic i would recommend getting another dr. that is not cosmetic man WTH i cannot get over that. Like, who has "cosmetic" surgery on a frikken fallopian tube. hell, im gettn lipo if im goin all out with the cosm surgery. Was the surgery today? or nex tues? sorry i can't be of more help.

Thank you so much for answering. You really helped confirm the feelings both me and my guy have been thinking. I'm definitly going to try to see about getting another doctor. Thank you so much, in my paranoid mind this was the next step but you have helped alot in reassuring me.
I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 17. About a year ago, aobut when I turned 18, I started experiencing new problems. Before my period starts i have severe abdominal/pelvic pains, it feels like someone if stabbing me. The doctor sent me in for a vaginal ultrasound (OUCH! not advised if your a virgin like i am ) and an abdominal ultrasound. Both came back normal but I still have these stabbing pains. Sometimes it is so severe I cannot walk. Has anyone else had this problem, or is it just me.
Thanks!
