For those ttc “Metformin helps increase fertility in PCOS
40% of women treated with metformin ovulated within six weeks.
New US research confirms that metformin can help to increase fertility in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
…49 women diagnosed with PCOS were treated with 500mg of metformin for six weeks. If ovulation did not occur, the dose was increased to 500mg and, after a further six weeks with no ovulation, 50mg of clomid was added.
Of those treated with metformin alone, 19 (40%) had spontaneous periods and ovulated; 15 (31%) required clomid therapy in addition to the metformin and, of these, ten (57%) ovulated. One patient dropped out of the trial because of side effects.
The study revealed that 20 women (42%) conceived in an average of three months, although seven of these (35%) subsequently miscarried. Gastrointestinal side effects were observed in 19 patients, and five reduced their metformin dosage due to side effects…”
