If you were dx with IC id you ever have any type of surgery done on your cervix? Leep procedures?
I have had some surgery on my cervix (leep procedure) and I was wondering if it would effect my chances of being dx with IC if I get pg my next round of IVF. My IVF dr stated at my last visit my "cervix was very difficult". I was having a hysterscopy done.
thanks for your insights.

I'm sorry you have this extra thing to worry about!! Yes, you are at increased risk. I would highly suggest getting with a peri who deals with cases identical to yours, because that person will have the most knowledge and intuition and best advice for you.
I didn't have anything wrong with my cervix or any surgeries. That has made some of us "atypical" ic cases. In my opinion, it was the hormones that didn't come through for me, so my cervix was pitifully soft and weak during pregnancy.
Best wishes with ttc!

Aimye,
Mine too was similar to Sherry's, It looked fine almost to the point where I could have an internal ultrasound one day and it look fine to that night my waters break. This made it difficult for the doctors to diagnose. I was probabley lucky that the only indication was that my waters broke (2 preg) with no infection or bleeding so my specialist could rule out those contributing factors. I had a suture placed and ended up having no shortening.
I did not have any surgeries. My IC was a complete surprise to me. Previous I had a 2nd trimester loss, but nobody had associated it with IC. I had heard about IC by watching shows like Maternity Ward and Birth Day. The shows didn't go into great detail, so I never put 2 & 2 together. ON the day I went to the doctor and was surprised by being 3cm dialated with bulging membranes was when my education began. I had a successful rescue cerlcage. I was of the impression that this was extremely rare. While on bedrest I begin my hunt into IC and was floored because I couldn't find much information on successful rescue cercalges. The statistics looked so bleak. After Jamie was born I found Soul Cysters and was surprised to find how many women had IC. How could this supposedly relatively rare occurance be so prevelant here. There must be a link between PCOS and IC. I saw I wasn't the first to notice this. Viv had seen the same thing so I watched her posts and she learned of a study that linked progesterone to IC and I checked it out.
I think that all women with PCOS should be monitored much closer than the average pregnant woman. Our progesterone levels need to be checked frequently and not just during the first trimester. Since we seem to have a high rate of IC we need more cervical checks during our second trimester. Definately, if you have additional risk factors for IC I would demand more cervical checks and see about getting a cerclage.
I had no indication 2 days before I went to the doctor and was dialated, so all the extra checks may not prevent a loss. A preventative cerclage is the best method. However, if they link the problem to progesterone then perhaps supplimentation would be helpful. Some people also have made it close to term by being on strict bedrest, even after dialation.
I hadn't had any surgery either other than a D&C a long time ago.... and as you know all of those IVF's.
I agree that you'd need to see a Peri.... I can give you the name of the guy at Brigham who did my cerclage.. he's WONDERFUL. I'd talk to him and ask what complications you may have... and if a cerclage placed at 12 weeks would help keep you pregnant.
A rescue cerclage is a bit different than what they do at 12 weeks.. precautionary. You wouldn't have bedrest or anything like that and could live normally.
*hugs*

Thanks Brenda! I'm not even pg but, I want to express my concern. I am afraid my reg ob/gyn will just dismiss me. She was the one who did my surgery. When I had the surgery, she didn't seem to concerned about future pgs. When I had my last hysterscopy Dr. Gardula (?sp) at brighams, kept saying my cervix was difficult and had a hard time during the procedure.

your concerns are REAL. I wouldn't let any OB dismiss you. What OB do you use?
I'm going to OBGYN of Southern NH in merrimack.. and will be delivering at St. Joes assuming
everything goes well. My OB is GREAT.. and certainly wanted me to see a Peri when I had
the PRL during what should have been our first amnio. He's even taken all of the peri's advice on
future treatment... so he's not one of those "I'm always right" kinds of docs.
The doc I saw at Brigham was WONDERFUL... David Oalang (I know i'm not spelling that right).
He met with us for over an hour.. then made sure he was the one to do my cerclage the next day.
he's very sensitive to IVFer's needs because he and his wife went thru several and she ended up on bedrest with twins at 22 weeks due to PTL. She's an OB too. he's in the Maternal Fetal Medicine Dept on the 3rd floor.
I'd definately at least talk to him for a consult.

I had 2 surgeries to remove fibroids prior to getting pregnant. There was no place for my embries to stick, so it was either get surgery or no pregnancy. I was never told anything about what the surgeries could do to my cervix, but then again I would have taken the chance since I could never conceive without the surgeries. It wasn't til after the surgeries that I was diagnosed with PCOS, so add another problem to my list of infertillity problems, which you probably do not have (I hope!).
After lossing my twins in March due to IC (no one ever even told me about IC til then, not even my peri! ), I am ttc again and know I will need a cerclage. But, that begins a whole series of other questions in of itself! AAAAAGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!
Why can't just one thing be easy for us?!?!?!?
I just can't stand hearing all my friends that get pregnant when their husbands sneeze and it is soooo hard for us.

My ob/gyn is out of North Andover, Marie Lemonier. Even though I am not pg, do you think I should go in to see a peri for a pre conception appointment, or should I just wait until after IVF and we confirm a pg?
By the brenda, how are you feeling?

yeah... I think you should at least see a peri for a pre-pregnancy consult just to see what they have to say about your past pregnancies. I say this because once you're pregnant, it could be too late to stop
a miscarriage if you have IC.. trust me... I had NO idea I was in labor and lucked out that I happened to have an appointment that day.
Feeling ok.. tired of bedrest already. blah.

Nobody had a clue about my cervix until it happened. Nobody had ever messed with it at all. At the least, you need a LOT of cervical checks when you're pregnant. Starting from week 12 on - hopefully every other week. If they notice a problem before you're dilated, a cerclage can be VERY successful. If you end up with bulging membranes, the odds are against you (but all hope isn't lost). There are some miracle babies on here that made it despite broken water and bulging membranes. Just please make sure you have a good peri in your corner!

You are definitly at rsik! I also had no reason for IC, but it happened anyway... The awful thing about IC is that unfortunately it is usually too late when the cervix gives. I am with viv in that I would make certain you stay on top of things and see a peri if possible. Although I never had any surgery on my cervix, for some reason I was very worried about IC and thankfully I stayed on top of it. My original OB said there was no need to see a peri... She was Sooooooo wrong. Don't let your doc dismiss your concerns! I am one of the lucky ones and I was able to hold in my babies until 28 weeks...
