How long did you have to take the supplement before you started to feel better? I just recently found out that my zinc and iron were both low normal and have been put on supplements. I'm hoping this is finally the answer to my problems for all these years. Thanks!
i get iron shots. its the equivilant of 100 tablets and no tummy problems! i've had 3 shots and we're going to do a blood test to see where my levels are at now. also, i feel about a million times better.
I was on several hundred milligrams of iron for a couple of months before I really felt like my old self again. I noticed a slow, but steady, improvement over 8 weeks or so.
Wow. That sounds like some heavy duty treatment. Like I said, my iron was low NORMAL. Still with in normal range. But at the low end. You guys must have been low beyond normal. I'm on a supplement called Tandem F. One capsule daily. Its 106 mg of elemental iron and 1 mg of folic acid. I hope its enough.
My iron was around 7. It was so low that it was throwing off my platelets, rbcs, and hemoglobin.
My symptoms were very limited. I tried to donate blood and apparently because my iron was so low, my body was not creating blood like it was supposed to and I couldn't even fill the bag and I almost passed out. Then, I noticed I was terribly tired. I could lay down anytime, anywhere and sleep for hours.
i was just tired all the time. i didnt even really know anything was wrong until after i got the shots and realized that normal people had way more enegry than i did.
It takes a while for your iron to increase as your body can only uptake a certain amount as its toxic to the body in large amounts. But the best thing that you can do is take the tabs with orange juice at the vit c increases the uptake and do not drink anything with caffine in it an hour before or after u take the iron as it decreases how much your body uptakes.
My gynae told me that on average your iron will increase by about 3-6 mls per month while on iron tabs.
And eat plenty of rare steak, liver and green veg!!!
Hope this helps, i know how awful it is to have low iron, and in the end i had to have an iron infusion!!
Also get vitamin C it will help your body keep and retain iron.
My symptom was tiredness...extreme tiredness. I would get exhausted talking...washing my hair took all the energy I had...like someone else said I'd fall asleep anywhere, subways, clubs, bus stations...I couldn't control it.
I noticed a difference in about 2 maybe 3 weeks...
Like lizcharles said it is amazing when you start having the energy of a normal person...
Best of Luck

along with the vitamin C making it easier to asorb iron, drinking caffeine while eating iron rich foods makes it harder to asorb them. so say you're having a steak or a spinach salad, don't have a soda with it. wait about 2 hours to drink cafeinated things.
Thanks guys. I don't drink caffeine though. Gave that up when they found that my vitamin D was low. Did any of you guys experience vaginal dryness and/or chronic and persistent vaginal infections? Just one of my many symptoms that I hope to get rid of.

I don't remember having any of those types of issues. Mainly I was just tired and I agree with the other gals. It was an amazing feeling once I started getting my energy back. I suppose my anemia came about over time and I didn't notice just how run down I was until I started feeling better. It was like night and day.
I was taking iron supplements for about 3 weeks before I started to feel better. I've tried to change my diet, but if I stop taking the supplements I tend to go right back to where I was.
