Question For those of you who use or have used Prometrium....

My ObGyn has me taking Prometrium the first 14 days of each month to bring on AF. AF arrived on Friday (my 11th day) but I have still continued to take the Prometrium. I have 2 more nights worth left and I was wondering if you continued to take the Prometrium until it was gone as prescribed or if you stopped once AF had arrived?

I just wanted to know if it was ok to stop taking it now that AF is here or if I should just finish the Prometrium. My Dr told me that it could take a few days after finishing the Prometrium for AF to start so I wasn't expecting it before I finished my meds.

Thanks!

Stacie

I would keep taking it. My doctor only has me take it for 5 days whenever I want to have a period, or 10 days when I want to stop a period. I find that I take it for 5 days, af starts 2 days later and lasts for 5 days. When I want to stop a period I find that it stops 2 or 3 days after my last pill. HTH

I would stop taking the Prometrium. All it is doing is keeping your progesterone levels raised. It normally works by mimicking the last two weeks of your cycle and when you stop taking the meds, the drop of progesterone signals the lining of the uterus to slough and start AF. The fact that you got it before you finished the doseage just means you were at a different part in your cycle. You don't need the rest of the Prometrium. You want those progesterone levels to drop. Hope this helps!

Hmmmm I'm wondering if since I did finish the Prometrium if that is why AF is still here on CD 8?? It has slowed down to a medium to slightly heavy flow now but still seems like this period is dragging on forever!!! Any idea when it might stop?? I took my last dose on the night of the 13th.

Thanks!

That might be a reason why AF is lasting so long. I would give it a few more days and if it hasn't stopped then you might need some meds to stop it. It should taper off soon though.
