So I know I've posted on a few other threads around here, but I'm actually on the verge of making a consultation appointment with a plastic surgeon so I wondered what everyone thought about the pros and cons of breast reduction. Have you had one? Do you know someone who has had one?
I'm wondering if the scars will look horrible. I had surgery when I was 19 and the scar isn't even noticable now, but it was only about 3 inches long.
My family doctor recommended a surgeon. She has seen him before (for minor things) and I really respect her opinion. But I've read that we should compare and shop around for surgeons. I've read some bad stories on the internet about things going wrong and women being left worse than they were before.
But I can't wait to fit into normal shirts (I'm five feet tall on a good day, and am wearing a 38DD right now) and not have constant back/neck/shoulder pain and headaches. And I've never been able to take my bra off and get comfy when I get home-can't wait for that!
Any info is greatly appreciated. I'm trying to hear from everyone I can find, and I know cysters will be honest. Even if it wasn't an ideal experience, I"d love to hear about it.
I had it done 3.5 years ago. The scars are bad at first but with the right treatment they are almost gone now!!!! It was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. Clothes fit better, my back doesn't hurt constantly, I have a better quality of life.
As for surgeons- find one who will let you stay overnight. Some consider it 'outpatient' surgery and it ABSOLUTELY is NOT!!!!!! It will HURT and you will need to be on a morphine drip forat least 24 hours- not sent home the same day with Percocet. I shopped surgeons and found this out- and am I glad I did! I woke up in the middle of the night that first night every 3 hours with pain. Keep that in mind!!!! Also- they will offer elective liposuction on the sides, under your arms. Insurance doesn't pay for it because it is cosmetic so it will have to come out of pocket. DO IT!!!!! If not, you will have smaller breasts with these 'dog ear' looking things hanging on your sides. I saw pictures with and without. I had that done as well. Your breasts will be kind of hard and tender for awhile, but then they will fall into their new natural shape and you will be so much happier!!!!
Good luck- let me know if you have any questions!

I had my reduction about 4 years ago and if I had to do it over again, I would do it in a heart beat! It was the best thing that I have done for myself. I had a job that I was on my feet for 8 hours. The back/shoulder/neck pain was awful. I noticed an imident difference when I returned to work (which if I remember correctly I was only off for a week, I think). I was so nice to be able to wear a normal shirt or a strapless bra.
I do agree to shop around. I was only 19 when I had mine done and did not think about shoping around. I was very lucky and am very happy with mine but would still recomend it. Maybe then I would have found someone that does let you stay overnight. That would have been nice. The pain was awful the first night. scottishsweetie made a great point about the 'dog ears'. Definately get the lipo done. I'm glad I did.
As for my scars, they are very noticable right now but I have not done anything to treat them. But I figure the only person that ever sees me without a bra is my husband and he doesn't mind them at all. He saids my new boobs are much worth it!
Feel free to ask any questions!

The only thing I would be concerned about would be whether or not it might affect breastfeeding, should you have a child later and wish to breastfeed. I think there may be certain techniques that can better preserve breast function... I would speak to the doctor about that. As for the scarring there will be some but most of the time it will be covered up... and looking better in clothes and feeling better about your body are good trade-offs for a few scars, I'd think.
FWIW though I've got small boobs and I've never been comfortable braless... mine hang kinda low and it bugs me. I don't like the feel of them hanging. But I suppose if they reduced they'd also leave them nice and high for you so maybe that won't be a problem.

I had a breast reduction about 10 years ago and it was one of the best things I have ever done. Recovery was about 2 weeks but then I still had to keep dressing on it a while and for about a year I would feel a tugging pain if I moved just the right way or lifted something heavy. But, it was wonderful. No more back pain. Higher self esteem, clothes fit better, etc.
The scars, as a pp stated, are pretty bad at the beginning but fade over time. now 10 years later, you can't see mine at all unless you look super close.
I have never once regretted the decision and would do it over in a heartbeat.

I had the surgery when I was 17...32 now... I would do it again in a heart beat also. i am not sure how they think breast reduction is a day surgery!! I actually want to do it again. Since I had it so young and PCOS didn't kick in yet, the darn things grew back!!!! As for the, the surgery didn't really hurt, I remember being kinda out of it and I told my mom I was lying on something and she put her arm under me to check and ended up RIPPING my drainage pipe out of my breast...WOW was that tender and did it hurt, That was the only time I pressed for morphine. I think I was out in 2 days. Scar wise, you would not be able to tell (if u look closely u can) that I had surgery, but I have some nasty looking scars underneath...You will lose sensation, but it will get better, sometimes, when I get an itch, I have to grab and pull, scratching just doesn't work LOL. I was told I might not ever breast feed, so if you want to do that, the reduction might not be what you are looking for at this time but they could have changed the way they do things. In short...GO FOR IT!!!
