now that i think about it, a doctor first noticed my nodule around the same time i started getting other pcos symptoms. (i didn't know i had pcos at the time) but it was just after puberty, and i was trying to get help for severe acne. is there a connection?
I think women with PCOS can be more likely to be hypothyroid. My doc dx my PCOS and my hypothroid at the same time. I'm convinced I've had PCOS since the beginning of time, or at least since I was 11. My hypothyroid issues didn't seem to creep up until I was in my mid-twenties. The symptoms for both can be so similar.

I have both. I think I have had Thyroid issues since I was a teenager, but it took me this long to finally get diagnosed. I also think I had PCOS since then as well. I think they can go hand in hand. I would think the Thyroid would come first, causing you to develop PCOS....just my opinion....

I found this article while doing some research today. If we know that pcos is linked with IR and diabetes then this shows a link for about 20% (of not overweight people - not sure then for those of us who are overweight.!)
"While the link between autoimmune thyroid disease and Type 1 diabetes (also autoimmune) is established, Czech researchers looked at the connection between autoimmune thyroid disease and Type 2 diabetes in people who were not overweight. In looking at patients' thyroid peroxidase antibodies, TG-antibodies, TSH levels, and ultrasound test results, the researchers found that 19% of Type 2 diabetics had autoimmune thyroid disease. "
While I was being treated for hyperthyroid I was 'officially' diagnosed with PCOS by the specialist.
I am also curious about a link.
I think I developed PCOS and the thyroid troubles at the same time (after my son was born) but neither was diagnosed until this past Sept, 9 years later......
Is it possible that the PCOS is a symptom of thyroid issues, or even moreso, are they both symptoms of something else?

My personal philosphy is that since Thyroid Hormones control so many other functions in our body, it can get your ovaries and everything else out of whack...that's why hypo and pcos symptoms can overlap. They are both endocrine disorders, and often endocrine disorders go hand-in-hand.

i was diagnosed with PCOS my sophomore year of college and my thyroid problems probably started around the same time, but it wasnt until senior year that the thyroid problems were officially diagnosed. i kinda think the thyroid problems caused the PCOS, since my parents are convinced i first started going hypothyroid in HS.
i'm being treated for PCOS and my endo thought i'd have thyroid issues so she tested me and my bloodwork came out completely normal. diabetes runs in my mother's family, skipped my mom but she got thryroid problems.
Have any of you heard of hypER thyroid and PCOS?
Now that I am being treated for Grave's disease (hyperthyroid) I am starting to gain even more weight, I think maybe my thyroid and metabolism being so fast (though I had no hyper symptoms) kept my weight 'semi' under control. I was only about 50 to 60 pounds overweight and now have probably gained another 10 in the past 2 months.
I think that is what prompted the Dr to check the cortisol.

What has cortisol got to do with Graves or your thyroid?
I have been dx with Hashimotos and my cortisol levels are up but I dont know how or if they are related.
I was dx'd with hypothyroid last year and PCOS about 6 years ago. I was told that it is very common for women who have recently given birth to have thyroid issues. My dr also suspected that a medication I was given for post partum depression may have also affected my thyroid function. I was taking Risperdol for PPD. As soon as I began taking it, my weight increased and I had trouble losing weight. I stopped taking the Rispedol, and started taking Synthyroid and my weight gain stopped and slowly I lost weight. I went from 198 to 187. I still want to lose more, but basically my thyroid levels are under control and I feel I can safely look losing weight. (Does any of this make sense????)
I finally got a chance to ask my endo this at my last appointment. I'm technically hypothyroid, but he described my situation as a lot of people have thryroid nodules for no reason and just don't notice it because they're small, it just so happens that mine is bigger and noticable and.... so the pcos connection doesn't apply to my thyroid situation.
But for people who have an autoimmune tyroid disease/ hashimotos, there is supposed to be a connection with pcos, by the body attacking itself. He started to say that to describe it, but didn't go into it.... maybe someone knows more, and can expand on that?
