Default Thyroid nodule biopsy.... scared :(

I found out when I got diagnosed with PCOS that I had nodules on my thyroid. News to me! I went and got an ultrasound and felt confident they would be benign or fluid-filled. The doctor called today and told me there is a solid one on the left side that needs to be biopsied. I'm really terrified. I don't know if they are going to end up telling me that I need to remove my thyroid altogether or the nodules or what?

Yes, I'm a "what-if" type of person and a worrier! lol

Has anyone had a nodule biopsied before?

hi there,
i had mine biopsied in the summer of 2000. the lump was actually discovered when i went to see an alergist and he felt along my neck. i was hoping it was just fluid filled and nothing to worry about but i did end up needing a biopsy. it felt more yukky, icky uncomfortable. not a great feeling but just remind urself it's a necessary test. mine was begnign (sp?) and they put me on medication hoping it would help it shrink. after a few months and no shrinking the doc decided it would be best to remove the left lobe of my thyroid. i was of the mind that if it shouldn't be there, then just get rid of it. i'm glad i did. i do have to take medication everyday (just one pill, no biggy) and i go once a year for a check-up (though when i'm pregnant i need to have my levels checked more often).

good luck. i wish you all the best and try not to worry (though i know it's easier said than done).

I had the two most common types of biopsies performed on the nodule I had removed in 2004.

There's the FNA: Fine Needle Aspiration, which is probably what you'll have done. It's an exceptionally tiny needle that they use to drain the few necessary cells needed to determine if there's abnormal cells in the nodule.

There's a less common procedure called the Core Needle Biopsy. It's a bit more violent, but goes more quickly than the FNA- there's a much larger needle attached to a spring-loaded "punch" that drives the needle into the nodule through a small incision in your skin to get a "core sample" of the nodule.

Neither of them are too bad, though: you get numbed up! :-)

Good luck with your procedure, and let us know how it goes!
