Lightbulb thyroid/T3 info and questions

Hey All,

I recently spoke with a doctor and he told me something that I found to be extremely interesting.

He said that in the old days, stress was usually called by famine and starvation. As a result, a person's body used to decrease its T3 production to prevent starvation. (for those of you who do not know was t3 is- its an ezyme that is used in metablism- a lower T3 count results in a sluggish metabolism)

He then went on to tell me that in today's world our bodies resond to stress in the same way. Eventhough famine is longer the cause of stress- we still decrease our T3 counts. He also went on to say that even if our T3 levels test out "normal"- we may still have a thyroid problem

So I was wondering if anyone has heard of this, and if so, if they have any additional info. Also- does anyone know of any natural supplement/vitamins/foods that you could eat to enhance your thyroid- and if so- is it safe to take with glucophage and actos.

Thanks!!

I have heard something similar about the connection between stress and metabolism.

I can't remember where I read it (probably in one of the 10000000 articles on the internet I"ve read in the past 2 months) but stress will seriously affect your brain functions as well as your adrenal functions and pretty much everything else in your body. That is why, a lot of people who work out and eat heathily will gain 5-10lbs just because of stress alone.

I guess there was a study of people working at stressful jobs losing weight. The people who took a week off to relax and stuff lost weight 75% faster than the people who did not take a break.

Hrm.. Maybe I won't go back to work this Thursday...

I wanted to reply to what your doctor told you. I had a similar problem. I kept testing for my thyroid and it kept coming back fine, but my doctor was pretty sure I had a problem. She told me that I may have a blood resistance to the hormone, meaning I test ok but still have the problem. So she had me do a temperature test. I took my basal temp every morning for a week. It was a few years ago, so forgive me, but I think if you average 97.4 or below, it is indicative of a thyroid problem. She put me on some low level medication and I've been on it ever since. My doc. retired and I am with a new one and he has honored her diagnosis so far.

hope this helps.
